Years ago I thought I became a hose clamp expert when replacing 355 coolant and other hoses. I knew Oetiker/ear style, worm/screw drive, etc. My favorite brands were Norma and Zebra although I experimented with other brands. Toyota uses a windup style clamp for CV boots. But when I received these OEM clamps for 458 coolant hoses (VISA brand) I was stumped. How the heck do you tighten these....I assume a special tool? Image Unavailable, Please Login

They function kind of like zip ties and yes you need special pliers for them. Caillau is one brand that makes pliers for CLIC and VISA

Thanks - the Caillau website does not make it easy to find the proper pliers. Any ideas?

Plenty of other clamp styles that work fine and don’t need special tools.

Is that a better mouse trap or a more expensive one?

I’ve had mixed results with Gates powergrip. Maybe operator error. Worked fine on my restomod for years until I had to replace one due to wanting to re-route hoses (it didn’t fail). New batch didn’t shrink up as needed. Maybe a supply chain issue.

I would not use clamps that need special tools if there are alternatives because if you have to access the clamp away from home you are sol. For my racecar all clamps are simple screw clamps. On my streetcars they are all gates powergrip. The PG are the best I have ever used. They maintain grip over wide temp changes, have no tang to snag your arm when doing car work, look clean in my Ferrari engine bay.
