The previous owner of my 328 painted the front grill horse emblem. I would like to restore it back to original but not sure what type of finish it is. Does anyone know what would be the best Chrome, Satin or some other kind of finish? I would like to restore it as it is the flat horse that is original to the car.
    Thanks
    Ed

My guess is just plain aluminium anodizing.

Try cleaning with lacquer thinner...shouldn't disturb the factory finish. Just take your time and be gentile. Use a toothpick to clear the lines out.

I have read that the older Ferrari emblems are made from a cloisonne process. I am not sure if this pertains to the 308's. Essentially an enamel is laid in the metalwork. I assume only few shops have the capability and knowledge of doing it. I did watch an episode of Restoration Garage on the Velocity Channel where they restored a piece like this on an old Alfa for Pebble. The Guild of Automotive Restorers - Home - No affiliation or experience with them personally.

I must correct myself - if it is only the outer rim (just the chrome) then the lacquer thinner is a good place to start.

The emblem on the 328 is flat and I understand is a NLA part. I will try to remove the paint and if that doesn't work I will just get it chromed.

    Thanks for your help.

Front badge is cloisonné but I believe Bodazzie is talking about the horse on the 328 grille. I would be surprised if there is more than an anodized finish originally. Not chromed on the 328. Hopefully, paint is laquer and can be melted away with thinner. Worst case, a paint remover can be used. Might then have to recoat it with a clear laquer or have re-anodized.

Grille, not nose. The flat horse made of metal. I don't know the coating, but if it's factory, it should stand up to lacquer thinner...no scraping allowed.

Once the paint is removed, Autosol liquid polish should get the shine back; this stuff is magic on metals.

Please don't get it chromed. You better by a new chrome sculpted horse and keep this one. These are now rare and many BB or early Testarossa owners would pay for it.

If you want to keep this one get it anodized not chromed.

Had the paint removed but the finish is very dull and dark. It needs to be restored. It is a flat grill horse made out of brass original to my 1986 328 GTS. I know these are rare and I don't want to mess it up. I had 2 Ferrari restoration shops tell me it is Polished Chrome Plated Brass.

All your comments are much appreciated.

The Ferrari restoration shops you consulted are mistaken.

The original 2D horse (p/n 61739400, shown below) was not chrome plated and is no longer available. The horses currently available from Ferrari (p/n 63603800) are 3D and chrome plated. Your original horse is getting hard to come by. Your can try a place like GT Car Parts or Ferrparts and try for a used original or take you horse to a plating shop to have it re-plated or re-anodized. Hopefully they can identify the original finish.

This is 100% correct. AND the 328 horses are getting hard to find. 328s do not come with the 3D chrome horse.
