Hey gang. I've searched the archives and come up with a couple of threads on Stabilus hood struts and alternate replacements. The struts on my front hood and engine compartment on my '84 Mondial QV are shot. Has anyone found a replacement strut, Stabilus or otherwise, for these? Anyone have a PepBoys part number or other alternate source? I'm trying to contact some of the sources that were listed in the prior threads, but just curious if anyone has replaced these recently.

    Thanks,
    Steve W.

NAPA is a LOT more accomodating and helpful than Autozone or PepBoys.

    Steve,
I used the Stablus part number 92307 which I got a Pep Boys for my 83 308. You have to compress them a bit to get them installed, which is kind of a pain. Also need to use the little plastic reducing bushing as the hole is some what oversized. In the end, they seem to work fine.

    Carl,

I think the struts on the Mondial are smaller than the ones on the 308. The front and engine struts are the same -- all 4 (2 front, 2 engine) are 10 1/2" overall length extended and 7 1/2" compressed. Do you know the overall dimensions, open and compressed, of the 308?

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Steve,
The rears look to be 13 compressed and 21 extended. I thought they might have been the same for you but I was way off. Front unit on the 308 is a locking piston. I dont even think it is charged.

    Maui, Hi
On my 308 GTSi rear bonnet, the part # I used is an RB87905038 this is the
number as shown on the Pepboys and the Autozone struts.
It was a direct fit no modification was needed.
    I 'm not sure on a Mondial

If you go to sachsna.com and download the Stabilus lift-o-mat catalog it will give you the oem replacement part numbers (not the Ferrari numbers). Check yourself to verify, but for Mondials it should be: front hood: SG437005
    engine lid: SG437004

You will probably not find this part number at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc (although they do sell Stabilus) because it not a high volume seller. Call a Sachs distributor to order them. I have found this to be the cheapest way and they fit the first time, rather than trying to figure out how to match up something that's "almost right" for about the same price. These should be a simple drop-in replacement as Sachs Stabilus is the OEM supplier.

Funny, I just had the same issue with my rear bonnet strut.

The standard Stabilus struts have different dimensions and ratings (although 500 N instead of 460 N for the original part shouldn´t matter too much).

I decided against using a strut with specs that are only close. The lid is a tin piece of sheet metal and I don´t want to run any risk to bend it.

Stabilus produces custom made struts, they would have cost 38 EUR with something like 6 weeks lead time.

Thus I ordered the original part from Ferrari on Wednesday, the price is something like 55 EUR and I am optimistic to have it within a couple of days.

Do you have a name of a dealer or distributor for these where they can be ordered? I have hunted around and can't seem to find anyplace.

I need both engine and front hood struts on my Mondial.

"Lift supports" are under "Body-Exterior" once you get your F model entered -- comes up with Sachs numbers Shan listed for $43~$45 each.

Another alternative is having them regassed. Sent the trunk, Engine hatch & glove box for 348 spider out to be regassed by lift technologies in Canada. Cost $25 per strut. I was instructed to make sure they are mounted with cannnister up so oil sits at bottom and lubes the seals around the shaft.

Just an update on this long lost thread. I ended up getting the struts from T. Rutlands. They were not terribly expensive, as I recall, and fit perfectly.

    Steve,
Thanks for the tip, I found them at Rock Auto.

    Hzimmer,
I surfed around for places that "re-gas" and found that this seems to be something done frequently in Australia, UK and Canada, and didn't seem to find anyplace in the USA that does it. Given the possible hiccups with customs sending them to Canada and possibly getting whacked with duty on the way back, and the fact that new ones are only about 40% more than repairing them, I'm going to just get new ones.

Last year I made the mistake of having a set of Koni's rebuilt and it ended up costing considerably MORE than simply buying new ones. Lesson learned.

    Patrick-

I just replaced my Mondial front hood struts about a month ago, ordered from Rock Auto. Exact length and fit. Just didn't have the "F" word stenciled on it. It was a Stabilus, as others have said. Easy swap.

I recall something like they are in the exterior/body section of the online catalog. At least for my car.

Seems the currently supplied Stabilus units from Ferrari no longer have "Ferrari" stenciled on them anyway, so no big deal. I suppose you might find some "new old stock" some where, but that is risky on something "perishable" like these gas struts.

Run a 1989 328 GTS on the look up on Rockauto.com will get you the right part number. The 308's and early 328's had the funny strut with the ball detent lock on them, and if you forgot to release the ball, you could bend the aluminum hood. The "upgrade" is to purchase the late 328 Stabilus gas strut and install that instead.

Just installed 2 Sachs front hood struts on my Mondial,
    Part#SG437004 from Rockauto at @ $50 each.
They look OEM but do not have FERRARI stamped on them.
They work great. No more broom handle for me.

My GT4 had the struts with the push button to release, not gas pressurized like are described in this thread and I think all GT4s were this way. Probably you'll need junkyard parts. I'd call Ferrparts or Eurospares.
