Getting a new SUV in a week or two and I have narrowed it down to either the Honda Pilot or the Volvo XC90. We have an XC90 now and it was one of the first ones made. I always felt like it was underpowered and poorly made. The new ones have a 311 HP V-8 so they are most likely better. I am biased towards the Honda. It does everything the XC90 does and costs $18,000 less. Any opinions would be welcome.

    Thanks

  2. I bought a 2005 Honda Pilot. It has been nothing short of great. I was going to get a hemi Jeep, but the wife wanted the Honda. I have put about 10,500 miles on it so far, it averages 20 mpg. It does good in the snow, and nothing has come apart or any need to take it to the dealer. It's the first car that I have ever had that did not have to go back to the dealer for some problem(s). The sunroof, heated seats, dvd, and the brown leather interior are first rate. It runs pretty quick also.

The Honda will essentially be trouble free.

I would concur with the second post regarding the Hemi-Durango. I spent a weekend with that truck and was very happy with it. It is also a steal with an MSRP of less than 39k.

My sister has the Honda and likes it a lot. It's a well built vehicle. The Volvo has had teething problems and is probably priced a bit too high for what it is.

You should also take a look at the new Ford Explorer. A friend of mine just bought the Eddie Bauer version for his wife and paid 32k. It is a very nice SUV. I was stunned by how far the Explorer has come.

I am a Vovlo guy so I vote for the XC90. That being said you really can't go wrong with either of them. Even if you are a "drive it until the wheels fall off" kind of guy like I am it is really a horse apiece. The Honda will save you money now but the resale on the Volvo should be higher.

    !!??

Resale higher on the Vulva? Not in my experience (having sold both Vulvas and Hondas).

    (At least percent-wise)

Bought a '05 Pilot as my everyday car. Trouble free and higher resale down the road than the Volvo.

I have an '05 Pilot and absolutely love it. It is very good in the bad weather, and it has never given me an problems, 27000 trouble free miles

I suggest www.hondapilot.org if you want to read more about the Pilot, I've been a member there for a while and found it helpful when looking for questions to be answered.

    Good luck

I have driven both, the Honda is great but everyone and their cousin around here drives one, the Volvo has more luxury and the Honda more utility

Don't forget to change the rear end fluid with the special Honda stuff at both 15K and 30K miles. Apparently, their fluid is very different from regular rear end stuff.

Seems to me it is excessive to have to EVER change the rear end, but apparently it is important in the Pilot. You need a small pump and a little less than a gallon of the stuff. 2 new washers also. 10 minute job.

Other than that there are no excessive maintenance issues with the Pilot.
