    I thought you all might enjoy this adventure I just came back from. My Mom is from the Carlisle area in the North of England and every summer I would go to visit my Grandparents there. Nearby is Hadrian's Wall, the Wall stretched from coast to coast as the northernmost edge of the Roman Empire. There is now a hiking trail that runs from Wallsend outside of Newcastle to Bowness on Solway near Carlisle. The path is 84 miles long and I got together a group of 9 friends and we hiked it over 6 days from 4/30/17 - 5/5/17. Here is our story, day 1 was 4/29/17 and we flew into Manchester and drove to Tynemouth, a cute seaside village with great fish and chips and plenty of pints of local ale. This day was a relaxation day after flying all night. Hiking starts tomorrow.

    Ok, day 2 was the first day of actual hiking (4/30), we got up and took the train from Tynemouth to Wallsend (the start of the hike, or end of it depending on which way you are hiking). We hiked from Wallsend thru downtown Newcastle along the Tyne river to the outskirts of town and then on to Heddon on Wall, about 14 miles for the day. 3 of us stayed at the Heddon Lodge, a great B&B, and the rest at the 3 Tuns Tub, a good place to drink in the evening.     Day 3 of hiking (5/2/17) was from Wall to Twice Brewed, only 12 miles but this section has 2 Roman Forts (Chesters and Housesteads) as well as large sections of the wall rolling thru the British countryside. It also includes the famous Sycamore Gap from the Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood. I told the guys that if they thought you could walk across England for 6 days and not get wet you are crazy, well not only did we not see a drop of rain the entire time we were in the country, most days were sunny, breezy and just beautiful weather. This section is easily the most scenic of any day, here are the pics.

    Great trip and cool piece of history.

    A client went with friends on their dream golf trip for a week in Scotland to play all the famous courses. All had serious rain gear and none of it got used. Perfect weather the whole time. I rode a motorcycle to the arctic circle. 95 degrees in Fairbanks and 75 degree sunny weather at the circle.

    Good karma is not to be taken lightly.

    It was amazing, day 4 pics coming shortly. If you want to do it get the book Hadrian's Wall Path by Henry Stedman, it has all the info you need to plan it. FYI, there is not much of the wall on either end, the middle sections are amazing.

    Wednesday (5/3) was the fourth day of hiking and we awoke to more sun and not a cloud in the sky. Good thing because we were hiking from Twice Brewed (near the highest point on the trail) to Walton which is about 16-18 miles depending on if you believe the book or our GPS. This is another stunning section with many crags to navigate and towards the end of the day the trail goes thru some small towns so we grabbed a bite to eat at a local tea room before finally arriving weary and tired at Florries Bunkhouse in Walton. The owner, Joss, could not have been more hospitable and we enjoyed our Steak and Ale pies for dinner with some local ale to wash it down.

    Day 5 of hiking was an easy 12 miles from Walton to Carlisle. We had another great day, sun and 55 degrees. Nothing of the wall in this section just walking thru some farm fields before hitting the outskirts of Carlisle. We stayed at a nice B&B in Carlisle and had some more pints in downtown. Overall a nice relaxing day after some of the long hiking days.

    Fantastic to see the rest of the wall... I was at Housesteads a few weeks ago but only for a day trip so wasn't able to walk very much of the wall itself.

    My Dad did the full walk with a bunch of friends in the early 1970s, I imagine most of the middle section hasn't changed much.

    Good to see you had a great trip.

    Thanks for the comments everyone. We had such an amazing time that we have even more people interested in the 2018 hike. We plan on hiking The Great Glen Way in Scotland in April 2018.
