Help! throttle cable break

    I started my beloved 308 today to get her out of storage and she fired right up, eager to hit the road. First time I pressed the gas pedal, I heard a pop sound and the gas pedal went limp. I shut her down in investigated my suspicion of a cable break/disconnect, and to my dismay, found the cable broke at the crimp on the throttle body end. So I can now enjoy a summer of idling around town!!! Saves on expensive gas :)
    Anyhow, I did a search of the archives and found nothing regarding the replacement of the cable. Does anyone know how this is done? Can a new piece of cable be fed into the sheathing? If so, what to do about the crimped ends? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Eagerly awaiting advice from the more experienced!

    I just bought a new cable . . . you fish it from the underneath into the driver's compartment thru a large grommet . . .can't quite remember if you fish it from underneath or above thru the piece of tubing on the firewall though . .. you can see the cable arcing/hanging down about 6" off center on the drivers side . . . I took the access panel off underneath (small one about 6" x 12") which if I recall made everything pretty easy to get to at the pedal side . . my pedal trim comes out pretty quick also ... had that out but not sure if it's totally necessary . . . lift is a huge help :).

    Thanks for the feedback. I have already pulled the broken cable from the sheathing. It has a threaded end crimped on both ends, which appears to be too big to get thru the sheathing. Did your new cable come with one end not crimped to the threaded end piece? By the way, where did you get the new cable?

    Yep one piece with the sheathing . .. do a search on Fchat for suppliers in your part of the country .. . . I'm sure fchat sponsor Ricambi has 'em.

    I track my car so a broken throttle cable or clutch cable can wreck your weekend.
    I have a spare for each.
    Not too expensive.

    Steve,
    Have you replaced the throttle cable already? Sean mentioned a lift would be helpful. Is this a difficult job or can it be done in an afternoon? I have the car in remote storage, so tools are limited by what I take with me when I go. Anything special I will need for the job? Just looking for a bit of insight from you or another DIYer who has done this before.

    Throttle cable replacement complete. Actually, it is very easy if anyone needs to do this. I pulled the old cable/sheathing out from the engine side. Fished the new cable in from the engine side. Be sure to get the cable through the locating grommet near the valve cover closest to the passenger compartment! The cable then goes into a tube end that sticks out of the firewall. Pushed the cable through until the right amount was in the engine bay to connect to the engine. Then I looked under the car and found the cable on the garage floor. But alas, another tube end was visible protruding out from the rear of the splash plate. Simply reach under the car and feed the cable end into this tube, and it appears at the gas pedal ready for connection. I threaded the cable into the gas pedal assembly and locked down the jam nut. Then went back to the engine bay and connected the sheathing adjustment to the inside of the plenum (this was difficult to reach to remove the original and install the replacement. I used the original lock nut, since it was wider and allowed my wrench to grab the nut when at an angle. The new nut that came with the cable (Ricambi, around $85) was slightly thinner and the wrench failed to grip it enough to get it tight. It might have been easier to remove the oil filter, but I didn't have the tool for this with me.) Anyhow, I left the sheathing adjustment loose, then attached the cable end to the engine. (remove the female connector from the engine to avoid twisting the cable when threading it into the connector. This is easily done by removing the cotter pin, backing out the lock screw and pulling the connector off of the ball end). Once this was tight, I adjusted the cable slop out of the sheathing adjustment until the gas pedal allowed the butterfly to fully close, then tightened the jam nut. Verified the stop underneath the gas pedal was set to stop the pedal movement at the wide open butterfly position. I assume this is to ensure no excess tension is placed on the cable if you floor it aggresively?

    Hope this helps someone else if they need to do this job. Also, if I missed something or did something incorrectly, I gladly take feedback/correction, hopefully the nice and constructive types! She is alot more fun to drive when the engine does more than idle!!!!!! It's a good life in Ferrariland...
