Ok, so I'm looking at adding to my collection with a 70's agile screamer. Cars in the garage are a FF, V8 M3 (Modded track monster), Volvo XC and RS3.

Looking for a childhood dream fruition and am down to one of these 3 -

    1. Dino 246 GT
    2. Lancia Stratos (Not interested in the modern reworks)
    3. Fiat 131 Abarth

Forgive me, I know that the Abarth is the odd one out here. I cut my teeth on 131's with the Lampredi TC and big Webers from the ages of 17-24. Four cars and seven differentials later but I never managed to get into an Abarth. Alitalia livery would be perfect.

This is a collection expansion so only needs to be a lot of fun. I would of course prefer a RHD but I suspect that will be a problem with this list [emoji38]

Parts availability is also a worry with the Abarth being seriously compromised out of the three

Budget around £300k so should be able to look at excellent examples.

Looking for owners thoughts and any feedback you'd be willing to offer.

    Cheers,
    Carl

Will be difficult to find a good Stratos for that money, but it is my favorite car to drive bar none. I’ve owned mine for 7 years and I’ll never sell it. I’ve owned Dinos as well fwiw and they are fun but not nearly as exciting.

Thank you. I figured as much, in my view the Dino is more of a beauty and thats why it's on my list. I also need to get into a Stratos to allay my fears about driving position.

The Stratos is going to be the most costly no doubt. But with the T.Hartley car listed at £485k I still suspect there are others to be found at around 400 which I'll stretch to. Some European examples are listed at silly prices imo but I may just be dreaming.......

£400k is a good budget. The driving position is not an issue. It’s also not a car you drive once and ace it, which is part of the appeal. It takes some time to master but once you do there’s nothing more rewarding.

Don’t buy the Abarth. It is not that exciting to drive by modern standards, the driving position (and seat) is awful and finding body/trim parts is a nightmare.

The Stratos is the best car, although it is the worst in terms of build quality and it requires a lot of respect as it is pretty twitchy (although cars with Gr4 suspension mods feel a lot better). If you buy a bad one God help you as restoration costs are very high. Finding a decent car below 500k EUR is a challenge, I have been looking for 3-4 years. In theory this should be a 400k EUR car, but no one is selling at these numbers and the few cars that are available cheaply are either Jolly Club cars, or have a new scocca/non original engine/history of a big accident (take your pick).

The Dino is a much more common car and arguably less exciting, but it is very well supported with parts and mechanics, it is absolutely gorgeous and if you spend the time to sort out the electrics it can be very reliable. I have owned two and the last one is a keeper. Also when the time comes to sell it there is always a person out there that dreams of owning one.

I have only had experience with a nice Euro Dino. Beautiful Platinum example that I did enjoy driving. But being a V-12 guy since '76 the little guy just didn't float my boat. There was an engine builder in Sweden (?) that could up the hp to 220. Pull the original out and have a Fiat Dino 2.4 upgraded and more powerful motor installed and the Dino would be perfect.

Sold my Dino before traveling down that road. Bought another V-12....lol.

Good luck with your decision and search. The Stratos is a screamer.

I know of a few who have had the Stratos in the past, and as cool as the car was, it quickly ended up being a garage queen or sold. Finding a good Stratos is difficult at best, and even a good one is a moody bugger.

Not sure there's much "screamer" in a Dino, but never the less it would be the car I'd choose.

It is pretty reliable, and all things considered, parts support and maintenance is manageble.

From a parts and maintenance standpoint, the Stratos can be a nightmare, and combine that with a car that needs a lot of care and you have a lot on your hands.

The Fiat. Well, as cool as they are, I suspect that it's more of an old romance and chances are, that you don't feel the sane way once you have the car. Sometimes memories are better than reality.

With a Dino you get into something unknown and exciting, which have a good chance of being a fun experience, so for me the answer is easy.

    Good luck.

Brilliant feedback, exactly what I need. Thank you so much Gents.

What's become very clear is that these cars on my list for very different reasons :)

The Dino for the classic feminine lines (one of the prettiest cars ever imo, from every angle and I've looked a lot!).
The Stratos for the classic masculine lines (the most brutal ever imo).
The 131 brutal looks and to make me feel young again lol (It's been on the list the longest).

However when it comes time to buy you really have to evaluate things more broadly. I'm now 52 years old and my reaction times are a lot slower than they used to be and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the best fast road driver in the world. I don't want to end up with a widowmaker that I drive only once a year, I want something that I will keep forever. Everything I hear about the Stratos is saying stay away, you're too old for the workload lol. There's a reason the Abarth has been on m y list for so long and I suspect that deep down I know that for the outlay, I won't be happy or use it enough. The fact that it's the slowest of the 3 does not bother me at all but the fact that I was quoted £9k in 1993 for a replacement differential does. I might just keep a lookout for a 16v head.

I have to say also (heresy I know) that the more I look into them, the more I am interested in the Lister STR Stratos. I will end up with something serviceable that to my eyes ticks all the boxes on looks just not the heritage. But for a new build price of less than £100k I can forgive that, especially for a right hand drive.

The way its standing at the moment is buy a Dino and put a deposit down on the LB STR (Which will take about a year to build). It's going to be a long search....

Thanks for all the input, much appreciated

The comments that a Stratos is high maintenance is nonsense. I’ve had mine forever many years with zero issues. It’s a Dino engine after all! They are relatively simple cars. They are also not going to bite you if you understand the driving dynamics and don’t push it to the limit. I drive mine more often than any other of my cars because it is so rewarding. You may bore of the Dino after awhile as I did, but that’s just my opinion. 52 is plenty young to enjoy it.

    Minor update.......

It's looking more and more like a Dino. The Stratos whilst perfect is a bit out of my reach for the condition that I want. I Had the pleasure of having a good look around the car J.Macari has just got in -

    https://www.joemacari.com/stock/ferrari-dino-246-gt/10004802

Absolutely beautiful and certified example. Downsides for me are LHD and Red (Ideally want a blue but would consider a colour change)

I also saw another, higher mileage 246 RHD in a non-ferrari dealer in surrey. Lovely car but not as well presented as the one above.

Any views on the JM car?

    Many Thanks :)

Hadn’t seen this originally but if I were considering these cars I’d probably buy a Lister Bell make Stratos and a nice Dino… this way you can have the Stratos experience without overcommitting financially and get the Ferrari too!
