My '08 Scud started to mis-shift into neutral while trying to shift gear, only at occasion. I shift again, and it goes back into proper gear normally, and then it shift normally again. F1 gearbox warning light also came on few times.

Took it into my mechanic, and SD3 showed two codes:

    P1742 Selection Potentiometer
P1770 Gear engagements with wrong shifts

Clutch wear was showing 49.84% worn.

I had an actuator fluid flushed and bled; there was no leak. I drove afterward, and it is still doing mis-shifts with F1 gearbox warning light coming on again. Took it back to the mechanic, and it shows same two codes as above. In addition, this time Clutch wear is showing 100%; checked it twice.

If the clutch wear was still 49.84%, I would have thought changing an actuator to a rebuilt one would solve the problem, but this clutch wear of 100% within last 70 miles is confusing me.

My clutch wear a year ago (2500 mi ago) was at 43%, so I thought 49.84% was an expected number. I have no idea why 100% wear is showing now; can't imagine it being correct, but we checked it twice more with same readings.

Any thoughts on what may be going on, and whether I should try changing the actuator first or the clutch first? I hate to do both if only replacing one can solve the problem; it's very costly.

Thanks in advance for your input!

p.s. time like this I wonder if I should trade it in for a new GT3 that's sitting in the show room at a local Porsche dealer right now... But then, I can't imagine anything else replacing what my Scud can do when it's behaving...

    You should check the clutch

How can I explain clutch wear going from 49% to 100% in 2 weeks?

    Who suggested an actuator rebuild???

Did the guy look at the clutch??? It can be seen and it is more accurate a measurement by eye than the machine.

If your guy has not done or suggested any of this fire him and find someone who has just a little idea how to fix these cars. Your current guy doesn't seem to know **** all.

Next. We have a shifting problem and the SD3 has on at least 2 occasions tried to tell you what is possibly wrong but yet we are ignoring it. Why???

My 430 did this, it was a worn out clutch, car had 20K miles on it.

Thank you for your inputs. He did suggest looking at the clutch from below and try to actually measure it directly.

Sounds like it's most likely my clutch? It has almost 16,000 miles.

Maybe I should get a second opinion?

Did you get it done at a dealer or an independent shop?

You have errors stored twice for a potentiometer which is what provides the shift actuator position to the TCU. If the potentiometer is failing and providing inaccurate information it will default to neutral. Either take an acquisition with the SD unit or better yet monitor with a Lab scope and confirm the sensor is accurate and consistent. Unless there is an external leak with the actuator it likely does not need rebuilding. Erratic clutch numbers can be due to a failing clutch position sensor.
What is the new clutch position reading in parameters? What was the clutch position reading key on engine off on the visit that resulted in a 49% clutch wear reading and what is the current clutch position now that it reads 100%. Note that using the wrong software in the SD unit F131E VS F131ELP will result in incorrect clutch readings.

Yes, you should trade this for the Porsche, you seem to be throwing cash into a hole with this issue. Find a proper mechanic to zoom in on this rather than shotgunning the edges of the problem

Definitely getting a new mechanic. I only ended up with him this time because the problem occurred on Sat, and he was the only local guy available to trouble-shoot. Fortunately, only spent money on changing the actuator fluid so far, but he was leading me down the path of changing the actuator + clutch, not guaranteeing the problem would be solved. That's why I posted this thread; didn't feel comfortable he was diagnosing this properly.

Thanks for all your inputs, and will post final resolution once I get it fixed properly.

    Thanks!

New clutch feels so much crispier shifting!

Yup, was an expensive bill, but hopefully will last a while.
