I'll be in the San Jose area next week and was interested in attempting the Hellfire Hot Wing Challenge at Smoke Eaters.

Anyone here try it? Any suggestions or advice? Are they as hot as they sound?

To give you an idea of my tolerance, I've eaten habeneros raw, no problem. These may use an extract, so that might not be a good reference point :)

I think you will be alright. Im a student at Santa Clara University, literally right across from Smokeaters, and the challenge is definitely a "right of passage" of sorts. I recommend bringing a gallon of milk or a bottle of Pepto. The hardest part isnt the challenge itself, but enduring the pain when its in your stomach.

If you come to your senses and opt out of the challenge, go for the Gilroy Garlic or Garlic Parmesan Sandwiches- they are great.

one of my coworkers tried it years ago and I could see the veins in his neck twitching. He only ate 1/2 of the wings.

I definitely have a cast iron stomach, so not overly concerned.

I am thinking that I'll peel all the chicken of the bone - then eat the mass of chicken on the plate. That way it will be over quicker rather than lapping at a bone for the remaining meat.

Not sure if I can do that - it's a thought. Also thinking I'll have a few beers before I tackle it...

Remember they won't let you use napkins during the challenge, and those wings are swimming in sauce.

I've only tried a french fry dipped in the challenge sauce. I couldn't breathe for 10 minutes after that french fry. My advice is to not get any of the sauce in your mouth!

Perhaps you could gargle with some Plasti-Dip before taking the challenge? :)

Isn't this the contest where you have to lick your fingers when you are done eating?

Is there anything at stake beyond bragging rights?

This sounds interesting. I may have to take a trip…

Just the health and safety of all life as we know it, wild and domestic, within 15 miles before, during and after evacuation orders due to toxic fumes.

Yep, I'd eat there about once a week when I went to SCU, and we'd get cheap beer on monday nights and play drinking games. Not sure why they renamed it again though, new ownership? I believe they renamed from Cluck U to University Chicken when they wanted to sponsor SCU sports, I don't think the school liked it, or so I heard.

It was in Man vs Food last season as one of the challenges
