Sorry this is a really dumb question was the Enzo ever been referred to as the F60 possibly as an internal designation?

I know Clarkson kept calling it the F60 in his Top Gear road test and everyone expected it to be called that before launch, but discussing the Enzo on twitter someone seems to think that Luca de Montezemolo referred to the car as an F-60 as well?

That's because some people thought it would be called F60 since it's two predecessors had names to celebrate the companies 40th and 50th anniversaries. The Enzo came out too early to celebrate the 60th anniversary so they chose to hail the man himself with it.

Internally the Enzo was called F140 because of it's engine, the F140 65 degree V12. There were some pictures when the car was released on which you could see a F140 plate at the back, but this 'name' was never officially used outside the factory.

I have seen it referred to as the F60 in multiple places. Not sure if it's true but I always went along with it and thought it was called that as a secondary name. I never refer to it as an F60, just the Enzo. I would like to see a legitamate answer to this in a book or publication from Ferrari.

The only "official" Ferrari F60 was made in 2009--their F1 car. Probably only 6 were made or thereabouts.

well, he is the same lad who mentioned that the 'romeo & juliet' machine was installing seats into the "engine block", that the F40 was a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, stated that the americans had stolen the idea of electro-magnetic shock absorber technology from ferrari, then later episode states that the americans invented it...

...but i still enjoy watching topgear :)

He's an entertainer, live with it. As for the 'crappy ratty driving', he's never claimed he's the best driver.

If you want to watch factual stuff driven by ex F1 drivers trying to be funny (and be bored to death in the process :)), watch 5th gear.

    :)

    Ferrari released this in 2002:

Maranello, April 16th 2002 – The design prototype of the Ferrari "FX" – this being the production code of this limited series model which carries on the tradition of the F40 and F50 – will debut at the "Artedinamica: Ferrari and Maserati at the Contemporary Art Museum of Tokyo" international Exhibition. The official inauguration will be on April 26th; from April 27th to July 14th the Exhibition will be open to the public.

The Ferrari FX, which will officially be presented at the Paris Auto Show on September 26th, will bring to the road Ferrari's most advanced technology, directly derived from the Formula 1 World Championship experience. The FX represents the ultimate expression of technological transfer from F1 to Ferrari's road-going GTs, the conception of which has always benefited from racing experience at the highest level.

Today Ferrari is releasing this first official photograph of this future model.

So it seems Ferrari used "FX" internally (which then also explains the name "FXX" for the extreme version of the Enzo), and as the last referral to the car before the official name was released.

When Ferrari announced, or rather when the press found out about the Enzo, they immediately named it the F60 themselves, and I've read how the 'F60' is the F50's replacement in many many magazines.

I think, certain people still have a tough time calling the Enzo it's actual name. They still prefer F60.

On the side note, is it Enzo Ferrari, or Ferrari Enzo? :)

Yep, you're exactly right. It is NOT F60.

Personally I think Ferrari is going to launch a new super car in 2012 & name it after some one or some place.

Roughly 8-10 years later in 2022 they'll launch another super car & name it the Ferrari F 75. Symbolizing 75 years of Ferrari sports cars and motor sports.

Funny thing is I was watching Top Gear earlier tonight and it happened to be the Enzo episode. I kept thinking to myself, why is Clarkson constantly referring to the Enzo as an F60.

I agree with everyone else, it was never officially announced as an F60, it was always just the Enzo Ferrari :)

With all do respect to Mr Clarkson, only a moron would call it the 'F60'. ;) :D

I do find Top Gear entertaining, but rarely is it educational.

Ferrari F60 is the official name of the F1 single seater for the 2009 season. The car as we all know was a complete disappointment. The Enzo was never known as the F60.....
