The most expensive Ferrari you can buy is a cheap one. Seriously. I know a body shop owner in Houston who brought a salvage Enzo. Lost his ass big time, and he owned a body shop.
Yeah parts are why these Ferraris get totaled I have searched the world for 355 parts as I have one I'm working on. What kills me is when the parts were available from ferrari people cut corners on a lot of cars and you will find piss poor repairs on a lot of Ferraris because owners are cheep *******s and didn't do it right. So for a 355 hit in the nose you will need this part, try to find part # 70000611 I think I bought one of the last ones that was available last year. I was looking for another one just to have it, over the last 6 months I can't find any available world wide.
Two Words: Salvage Title. What ever you put in, you will never get out again. Find a 400 sitting on somebody's driveway. They might pay you to tow it away. Drop a SBC into it. Recoup any costs by selling off parts you do not need. Live happily ever after.
This place has a used 70000611. New doesn't appear in stock: https://www.eurospares.co.uk/parts/ferrari/355-5-2-motronic/all/front-part-structures-41108/70000611 I have no connection to that site so forgive me if it's bad info.
Depends on the country and its laws. I have done a few where I live as the rules here are not too bad so long as its not a fire damage car or flood damaged. For accident damage it all depends on the state of the crash. For example if the airbags went off or the glass was broken its v expensive. I once did a 355 and the rear window had a hairline crack that was not visible at the time of purchase. That window alone was over 4500 pounds with shipping and its not an easy one to change for the inexperienced. If airbags are deployed, you need a certification for the vehicle in out city to get it re registered on the road. However many cars are fixable here due to the laws. For example a used ferrari say worth 100000 in a dealership is probably worth 75000 in the private market. If a car like that was involved in a crash and the estimate to repair it from the MAIN dealer was over 50000 (over 50% of the total sale value) the car is called a write off. A pvt individual can get parts from recyclers or Companies like Eurospares and also repair some parts (which dealers do not want to repair) to put it together . So the repair cost is probably 20000. Depending on your purchase price it therefore becomes viable to have one , not with an idea of reselling it but for your own use for a few years. I did a 348 and sold it on to someone with its full history in the open. He still loved and used it as an A to B run around covering over 90000 kms on it in 6 years. So its a ll a case of your buying price and numbers based on its condition. If its for your own use you can also buy reproduction parts like bumpers etc which are v expensive for originals in some models.
Hi, I'm rebuilding my 95 F355 GTB. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/i-crashed-my-355.618058/
i agree, you can buy a nice 355 for 65-75k , F430 85-110k.... personally i'd get a F430 (clean title) for around 100k, maybe cheaper and enjoy the hell out of it.
If you have the skills and access to a shop and proper place to work on it you can come out ahead, have some fun and learn about the car/process. A ferrari is a car just like most others, its not made with fairy dust. Cars with salvage or rebuilt title history trade for 25-30% less than similar condition cars. If you keep the math in check you can come out ahead. I'm just putting the finishing touches on a car that a look to make +/- $6K on on resale. Buy in was $17k, $4k worth of parts, + my personal time having fun working on putting the thing back together, Frustrating part is finding the small pieces, parts and fasteners to keep it as correct as possible and the frustration of waiting for all those parts and bits to come. Start with a car you would want to keep long term, cuz you might get stuck with it, but overall yes its a way to save a few bucks, have some fun if its something you like to do and save a car.
Bumping this thread up. I have bought a couple of salvage title Ferraris in the past with mixed result. The latest one is a 488 Spyder with 2k miles that with flood damage. "What a dumbass" some in here may say and to an extend they are correct! I have replaced all the electrical parts and sensors that were damaged with new original parts directly from Scuderia or Maranello. The car runs and drives like a dream!!! The only issues I am having is with some of the lights on the dashboard coming on (AVH, Brakes, Parking Sensors). I took the car to the dealership and once the ran the VIN they told me that since it had a salvage title (It has a reuilt title now) they will not touch it with a 10m ft stick. This is a bit troublesome, it is still a ferrari! Dealerships should service them. So if any of you know how to help this dummy get those issues fixed, I would be foreverer in your debt. Regards, The Dummy
