I have a stated value insurance policy with Hagerty on my 1990 348 and have not had any problems or claims. I read an article about classic car insurance and I am curious if any of you have had to file a claim with Hagerty for a total loss. If so, what was the experience like? I'm note hoping to have a problem but am curious about the process. Thanks

That is the million dollar question with any insurance company. One we hope not to have to answer :)
I have been with Hagerty though currently I am not. No comment because I have not had to make a claim.

i recently changed from a leland west policy to a hagerty policy, as they have provisions for commuting on my agreed value policy. if you have an agreed value policy and your car is totaled, what could be the issue besides establishing the total loss point? that's the main reason behind an agreed value policy - a set value. haven't been down that road yet, though.

I have been with JC Taylor for 13 years, no claims, yearly premiums good and valuation good. I give them a thumbs up

I am a bit surprised to hear that Haggerty will allow "commuting". For the policies I have with them, they clearly don't allow that. Requiring other cars for that purpose. Some vague occasional use described by my agent but not regular commute.

What do they consider as "commuting"

I switched from Hagerty to Grundy. They didn't want my wife to drive any of my cars because she had a glass claim on her daily driver. Grundy was cheaper too.

I use American Collectors Insurance. That is where USAA sent me years ago when I wanted to insure my first collector car. I have never had a claim, but rates are reasonable, they answer the phone, and restrictions are similar to other companies. I have never had an issue with USAA, so I trust their referral. Like others have said, you dont know how good a company is until they need to write you a check.

Also with American Collectors on 3 cars. Never a problem but also never a claim. I need to step up my stated values as I am about 2 years out of date.

I am going to chime in on this. I have had Hagerty on several cars, but was always put off by the lack of ability to enjoy and drive the car. I am willing to pay reasonable rates for the ability to enjoy my non-museum piece. If it was ultra rare trailer queen, I might see the need for Hagerty, as for now I have mine on Geico. Yep, Geico! I deal with auto insurance claims everyday and not a single one, accept for Chubb or Pure are worth a damn. They all have their ups and downs, but at least in Texas, I can fight for diminished value and we have the "umpire system" or "appraisal clause" that will greatly benefit the exotic car owner when settling a claim in Texas.

Geico's rates are reasonable, I can drive the car anytime I want for any mileage. I would much prefer a stated value with that type of usage, but alas the insurance world is in it for a profit and not for my convenience and desires.
