Ehh.... Not really... GT has balance of performance, which is good to level up the competition but on the other hand hinders the technical differences of each car.
BOP is a necessary evil in GT and some other categories. If it wasn't there to equalise the chances, only a couple of makes would stand a chance of winning. That would discourage other brands to go racing, and reduce the field. GT racing thrives on diversity, it's mostly supported by private teams and amateur drivers. BOP discourages excessive development, unlimited budgets, and one make domination. Hang on ... that may be what F1 is suffering from? But I don't want to be quoted as advocating BOP in F1.
At least some of us see the values of GT racing Given the maladies of F1 at the moment, I think it is a nice format to watch. Top speed at Imola last weekend was 264 km/hr which is impressive, specially for a track which does not have a proper/long straight.
I always liked GT racing, and even in the WEC, I am more interested watching them than the prototypes nowadays. Also, GTs still race on the Nordshleiffe at the Nuerburgring (the Green Hell as they call it), which is for me the ultimate test of driving. The Spa 24 hours, and the Nuerburgring 24 hours are more interesting to me than Le Mans 24 hours. GTs also race at Bathurst!
BOP has been a factor in sports car and GT racing for decades, maybe not to the level it is now, but listen to interviews from people involved back in the 80's and it existed even then. I caught some of the race livestreaming on YouTube Sunday before anyone else was awake and the racing was really cool. Dismiss it out of hand if you will, but it's your loss. Great racing is great racing.
