I was getting off topic on the F1 in the 70's so i'll start a new one. Is it worth flying over the pond to go to Goodwood? I've been to the Monterey historics many times, and have allways wondered how they compared. If its the same as Monterey, then I wont make it a priority. Anyone been to both? What do you think?
I have heard that over there the racing is much more agressive and they are not afraid to rub fenders.
They are two very different events in many ways than just the obvious. I've been to Monterey Historics twice and Goodwood Revival three times. Goodwood wins, just on pure ambiance, quality of the entry and level of driving. The Monterey entry is larger, to be sure, but Goodwood just reeks of history. If you want to see as many cars as possible, Monterey is the event to attend. But I find it almost too big to fully appreciate. Goodwood is necessarily smaller because of the period covered by the cars that are invited. From the car park all the way into the paddock you will think your're back in the late 50s or early 60s. The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a different animal. In terms of the cars invited to participate, it's more like Monterey, except even more diverse and eclectic. Of course there's no wheel to wheel racing, just the demonstration run up Lord March's (rather long!) driveway. For someone who has been to neither event I guess I'd recommend going to Monterey first. If you like the cars and the racing, then go to Goodwood Revival the next year. For me, if I could only attend one event year after year, it would be Goodwood Revival. (Plus, they have historic motorcycle racing). Hope this helps. Either way, have a great time!
I have flown over for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and loved it. This year I'll fly over for the Goodwood Revival of Speed. I haven't been to Monterey yet, but that will happen eventually as well. Goodwood is simply brilliant with the ambiance, the cars represented, the access to the cars and drivers and all the past champions. Not to be a show off, but I simply walked up to Phil Hill and chatted with him for a while.
You'll love Revival. Simply spectacular. Remember, all ticket sales are in advance now. I suggest you join the Goodwood Road Racing Club, and remember to wear jacket and tie to get access to the paddock.
I've been to both Goodwood meetings and both are great. The Festival of Speed is great because of the range of machinery on display and the fact that you can get really close to it. Everything from historic Honda bikes, such as 125s that rev to 22,000 rpm, and current F1 cars. The revival meeting is great because there is some real racing with top of the line historic cars and bikes, the circuit is good, and again you can get to the drivers and their cars - compare that with a F1 race these days, even with a pit pass. Also they usually have a first class flying display at the Revival meeting - Goodwood was after all a Fighter Command field during the Battle of Britain.
ive also been to the Monterey weekend and the Goodwood festival of speed, they were both amazing and blew me away, but i went to both in the same year and i did see allot of the same actual cars at both events .i.e. historic fords, the le mans winning bentley etc.So as said above maybe dont go to both in the same year as they can rather reflect each other, but definately go to both at some stage in your life.
I've been to both events and Goodwood is my favorite, although the weather is more reliable in Monterey and a wet Goodwood is no fun!
The revival meeting is so special not only for the cars, but for all the other stiff going on... It's so "English", with fancy dress compulsory around the paddock area, actors doing numerous comedy/historical scenes, aircraft displays, "background stuff".... like ye olde farming (hay making etc) just happening in the middle of the track.... You HAVE to go to Revival once. And you couldn't go too often.
