Does anyone happen to know any shops that are familiar with working on 3x8 models in the east valley of Phoenix? Seems like slim pickings...

Quite the contrary, we've got two of the best you could possibly ask for. I use Alex Traverso, who recently moved from the airpark to a shop just north of 101 North on 7th Ave. He's a former dealer mechanic:

Others speak just as highly about Andy Falbo in Fountain Hills. You will be in excellent hands with either.

AND... as of a couple weeks ago the dealership moved to dealership row on N Scottsdale Rd. The guys in the Ferrari club have said the dealership is making an effort to win more service work on older cars and are offering lower rates... I haven't confirmed that, though.

I had Alex look over my 328 before a track day a few months back, and just by eyeballing it, he noticed the front suspension forks were never updated from the 2mm stockers to a beefier 3mm version (not an official recall, but a 'service update' or something like that). The dealer confirmed everything, had the part within a day, and did all the work for free... on a 28-year-old car. So an excellent experience all around for a new Ferrari owner.

Andy Falbo rebuilt my motor for the previous owner and I've been very happy. He is very well respected:

Andy Falbo, without a doubt! He just completed a major on my 1981 308GTSi and the car runs the best it has since the day I picked her up 32 years ago! He is a real pleasure to do business with, he truly loves Ferrari's and his shop is spotless. Also, his prices are fair. You can reach him at 480-836-7915, use my name as a referance.

I just spoke to the service dept (Russell) and told him that Alex had identified the problem. They ordered the parts from Ferrari without looking at the car -- I think they may have just verified based on my VIN (mine is an '87) -- and scheduled me to come in. The service invoice refers to "Recall 460," so I guess it was an actual recall. Invoice says they marked the shims and such to maintain the alignment and "checked and adjusted" the alignment thereafter. It felt to me like the car actually handled a little better afterward, so it may have needed some adjustement prior to the recall -- so double bonus. (Though I only drove it a couple dozen miles before I had new tires installed, which REALLY made a huge improvement in handling... Bridgestone RE-11A's, highly recommended).

I went to visit Andy's shop today and it was amazing! So many beautiful Ferrari's and so clean. They were very friendly, knowledgable and helpful. (I probably asked too many questions but...). I'll probably bring my car there soon, thanks for the tip!

Look what was waiting outside as I pulled up:

I will Bill, thanks! What did he charge for a major if you don't mind saying?

It is a recall because of safety issues. That's why the work is still free. Any dealer should be able to check the VIN and tell if 1. it's part of the recall and 2. if it's ever been done.

Andy replaced all the worn and outdated parts, did the major tune up ( belts, fluids, etc,) checked everything, and I mean everything, on her, and replaced what was needed to make her perfect! He also followed up with me to make sure everything he did was to my satisfaction and working properly. In the 32 years that I have owned my Ferrari, this was the most comprehensive service that was ever done. The cost was $4300 which I felt was more than fair for the amount of work he did.
