So, it's been about 5 years since I have visited the Big Island. Any ideas as of what to do or see? I am obviously going to the Volcano park. Any suggestions on: dining, hotels, activities and points of interest would be great! And of course any auto events would be even better!!!

    Thanks!

I hiked in to the upper Waipio valley. Fantastic trail and not too challenging, just long.

    Hi

I'll offer a few thoughts about the Big Island. It has been quite some time since I visited there so I don't have really good tips to pass on. Yes, definitely go to the Volcano Park. When you get the park, someone should be able to tell you about any hikes to take that will get you within viewing range of a lava flow. The activity and flow is changing constantly. I did take a helicopter tour that brought us to some spectacular sights, truely amazing stuff. The helicopter tours are now very restricted as to areas that they can fly and the altitude that they must maintain. When I went, we got down very low. I don't think that this is allowed anymore.

I have never been, but I would love to be able to visit the telescopes on Mauna Kea. I don't know what, if any, visitor opportunities there are, but I am sure it would be easy to find out with a web search or from any hotel desk when you arrive.

I like the Waimea--Kamuela area. This is at the North of the island and is where the big Parker Ranch is. The country is beautiful. The rolling hills and pastures remind me of New England.

Don't forget to visit the black sands beach.

I am sorry that I can't give you any restaurant tips or info on any car events. I just don't know what is happening on the Big Island. I would guess that a call to most any car dealer, repair shop, or accessory store would get you plugged into someone that would know the local scene. Hopefully, a Big Island F-chat member will post.

    Aloha

First thing you'll want to do is buy yourself a gas mask for the VOG then buy a ticket to Maui and come have some fun on West Maui. Sail, Fish, Snorkel, Snuba Dive, Zipline, drive to Hana (some people think that's fun?!),swim with wild Dolphins, pet a shark (if your dumb enough to want to),horseback ride, parasail, paraglide, or just look for a nice pair(.)(.) at little beach!!
(or is it pair " o!o " at little beach??) :)
Sorry the Toy Store is closed so no Ferrari's to rent.

    Sorry to hijack...

    Mauispence -

You ever go hanggliding with Armin over in Hana???

Talk about a piece of work in a good way. Level 10 good time, loved every minute of it and my daredevil wife had him pushing it as hard as he could. If anyone goes to visit Maui, forget the helicopter ride, go to Hana and go hanggliding.

Book in advance with Armin and you will have a great time.

P.s. I have no vested interest in his company outside of wanting to make sure he is still in business for my next trip out there in a year or so...

See the islands from a bird's eye view with a big island helicopter tours. Discover the islands in a whole new way. See majestic waterfalls, tall cliffs, and erupting volcanoes.Feel the heat from the lava on one of our open door volcano tours.

Call Kevin Nakamaru on the Northern Lights and catch a billfish. If you really want to see some remoteness on the Big Island, Pat Fisher of Hawaiian Safaris can show you parts of Parker Ranch few people ever see. He can also host you on and amazing hunt for just about any critter you would imagine. The Big Island is incredibly diverse. Do something unusual!

The trip was amazing! The VOG was horrible at the volcano... In fact most of the part was closed due to the recent activity. You couldn't even see the sky there was so much vog/gas

skip the national park, drive in via the coast north of the park via the old 1964 lava flow, walk south along the coast over the flow, wear good shoes, bring a flash light even if its light out and plenty of water, see lava bench Big Island on google for the risks, the park is so conservative its tough to enjoy it, walk in from the north local style.
