In English, myth seems denigrating. Like saying something isn’t real. I hope that’s not the intent. In Canada, I know the man is absolutely revered. Multiple French Canadian coaches I’ve had and other Canadian racing car drivers hold him in the highest possible esteem. Legend, not myth.
"Mythe" has two meanings in French: 1) Something that belongs to to the extra-natural: the Greek myths (which implies also that it cannot be proved) 2) Something that has never been challenged accurately by knowledgeable people, and, once it has been, proves to be false. Rgds
Myth has for me the undertone of being a deliberate exageration of facts or personality. Like when the narative is somewhat embelished to impress a gullible audience. All the negative is being ignored, and only the positive that suits the story is kept: e.g the cult of heroes.
I was 15 when he was killed. I remember it to this day. Back then it was very unusual for local news to carry anything about F-1 but they carried the news of his accident and death. Villeneuve was one of those drivers who had IT ... natural talent by the buckets full. He was loyal to a fault. in 79 he could have easily won the championship, but he was loyal to Sheckter. If Ferrari had given him a good car in 80 or 81 - he could have been a champion easily. Knowing how the 82 season went, had Villeneuve not had his accident - or been able to carry on, I think he could have won the championship that year. the car was THAT good but just was not developed.
Mito in Italian is defined as leggenda, or legend in English and which is also a synonym for myth. Strictly speaking this is legend like a story or fable but obviously the origin of the term legend as in living legend.
There is no myth around Hamilton, only the hard reality his detractors cannot accept. The stats don't lie.
Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital. Aaron Levenstein
I agree, he’s not a myth as in legend then. He’s a myth in the sense you describe below. (BTW, I don’t think you’re working with a full keyboard as there are a few missing letters in your text—see narrative, embellished. Just saying.) I agree. Most wins = Ferrari Most championships = Ferrari Ergo, Ferrari = best team. Ever. Yes? Q.E.D.
For the statistics lovers: How can they explain that a driver with 6 wins and 2 pole positions is so much loved 30 years after his death. The reason is quite obvious. Gilles was sincerity itself and his human values are as decisive in the construction of this myth as his supposed madness on the track. I’ll never forget 1979.
Err no. Not in percentage. McLaren 885 races 182 wins percentage 20.56% Red Bull 308 races 66 wins percentage 21.42% Ferrari 1013 races 238 wins percentage 22.78% Mercedes 232 races 118 wins percentage 50.86 % Ferrari has only more GP wins by virtue of its longer participation in F1 The Scuderia has slightly more than double the GP wins Mercedes achieved, but for having entered 4 times more races.
Jeez, what would we do without your insightful posts? We’d have to trudge through all the pages of Wikipedia to get this info. Well done, thank you.
Noted. So what was the message then—it wasn’t very clear—that Gilles’ greatness was just a myth embellished for his gullible fans?
The message was in my post #8 which apparently you liked ! No need to repeat it. You even commented on the spelling; can't you remember now?
You’re right, I did like it. My mistake, I meant only to quote it. Like I noted, I don’t understand the point of the quote. Was it in reference to Villeneuve—this is a thread about him after all, as you rightly stated—and his gullible fans? Do you think Ferrari embellished the video for its gullible fans?
