Hi guys, I have always been a superfan of mid-engine Ferraris but have always had a desire to add a front engine V12 to the fleet. I used to have a 458 spider but traded for my current F8 spider. I want to keep the F8 as I love driving it. I recently came across a used 812 GTS that grabs me. With the new 812 replacement coming in the next year or so potentially — should I wait to spec my own (assuming I’ll be offered an allocation given my purchase history with local dealer) or should I just buy this 812 GTS which I just adore pros for 812 replacement: can spec my own, pay sticker price, potential for more favorable financing rates later Cons for 812 replacement: not sure if there will be an aperta version like the current gts. The one I’m looking at is a $618k msrp and will likely need to pay 50-70k over?? Pros of buying current 812 gts: not sure if there will be a spider version unless someone here can clarify. I don’t love the all digital displays like on the SF90 and 296 and prefer the classic interior. And I love the tailor made spec on the one available. Cons of buying current 812 gts: paying over msrp now unless anyone here can tell me their thoughts about that? Financing rates are less favorable so will likely pay more cash. Any thoughts from anyone here whether there will or will not be a convertible 812 replacement? Also any guidance on how much over sticker to pay for a Tailor Made low mileage 812 gts??
Con: 812 replacement - you probably won't get delivery for at least 3 years & convertible maybe 5 years Pro: 812GTS - take it home today - who knows what will happen to you or your taste or the world before your 812 replacement arrives
the GTS is absolutely amazing. While my Pista was best handling car, the GTS sound — especially w/the back window or top down — is unbeatable. My Lusso has aftermarket exhaust and sounds great but the GTS even in stock is way better. Personally, I think GTS prices will go back up as rates go down. My $0.02 is get the GTS now and enjoy it and also get an allocation for replacement. By the time it arrives you can trade GTS and not go years without being able to hear that amazing sound! Agree with the others. Get the GTS now. Even if you get a slot for replacement, it will be years before delivery. The GTS is the best current production Ferrari and you’ll forget the overs after first few miles. You can always make more money, but you can never get back time. If the replacement ends up being great, then you can still spec a new one, but at least you’ll have the GTS to drive in the meantime and to trade in. Not gonna be thinking about miles or depreciation on my death bed, but the amazing memories I made driving some of the best cars ever made with my friends.
Yep, buy GTS now to enjoy.. and also to cement your F167 allocation, as not owning a V12 line before will not help you, however don’t pay over MSRP, unless Tailor Made Special, they made a lot of GTS and there will be replacement.
I just went through something similar. I was offered a GTS after having a deposit in for 2+ years and decided to jump on it. I’d much rather have built my own but being able to enjoy the car now while keeping a deposit on the F167 was the route I took. No regrets; it is an amazing car. You say you found an 812 GTS that you really like. My suggestion is do the transaction through your dealer, tell them youd like to be on the list for the replacement. When the replacement is announced, immediately put down a deposit. This way the 812 GTS helps you with your dealer, and they will be sure to keep you informed and on the list. When they show the replacement, even if you don’t like it, keep the deposit, because these things have a way of growing on you. Then decide what to do when it comes time to spec the car. Some further thoughts The 812 GTS will likely depreciate from here- thats normal- just enjoy it, it’s an awesome car. Sticker for the replacement is almost guaranteed to be considerably higher than the 812 sticker. Future financing rates- there is no guarantee there either. This is probably the wrong section, but I don’t think they are going to be so much better in the next few years. (Id love to be wrong!) 812 GTS replacement- I bet they do a spider version. The question is whether or not they show it at the same time as the coupe. Based on the past, I would bet they show it at a future time. So make sure to be upfront with the dealer and tell them you really want the spider. It’s possible HQ will say you have to have a coupe in order to qualify for a spider.. so you might need to have an extra step in your plan. Something to consider. I generally feel the same about the new interface, but having spent some time with it, I realized, its really not that big a deal, and there are some things about the older setup that are weird and quirky, and over the years, I adapted to work around, the same happens with the new one. Overall, they actually did a good job, there are some things that need to be addressed, and I think they will do that over time. Not sure on what to pay as it would depend on the exact spec etc and I haven’t been watching GTS values that closely lately, however a number beginning with a 7 probably isnt out of line. Final thought: tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, life is short, eat dessert first! Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Eh. Price and value are so subjective. Some folks don’t care and if it’s what they want, get it. Others have hard time knowing they are “over paying” vs sticker. The real question is what kind of value is this car vs market. If it’s been sitting 3-4mo at dealer and they give you a great deal, I wouldn’t think too much about it. TMs are unique, so long as good design choices should hold value pretty well. Sticker is in the past. Look at other comps in the market for miles, spec, CPO included, etc. But if it’s a spec you love, I say put an offer in writing you feel good about and see what happens. Depends on the spec and most importantly if you like it. Currently the asking is about 120K to 140k above MSRP for a nice TM. You have to like the specs yourself and be willing to drive the heck out of it. Last week I checked, there are only like 2 or 3 in the market, which one are you thinking about? Maybe we can help answer your question about its proposed value better by looking at its specs.
Whatever it is you decide, remember that the way markets are behaving - its extremely predictable that the prices of these cars will tank in Q1/Q2 next year. Its already starting. Do you have to have a GTS now in Fall/Winter? If you wait, you can save a decent amount of money.
I'm in a similar boat. I have probably 2+ years to wait for my 296 GTS, so I'm considering an 2021 812 GTS that has 2,000 MI on it and is in colors I like. I buy cars to drive and enjoy, not flip or make money. But I also figure that with time, the 812 GTS will probably hold its value as it may well be the last V12.
There will almost certainly be an F167 convertible, VS and probably a convertible VS... so there will be a final, a final-final and a really final-final-final! Just need to keep on the lists and make an extra mil over 4 years
Only thing I guess Ive considered somewhat is -- I do like the analog tech in the current 812 and F8. I personally do not like the interface for nostalgic reasons on the 296 and SF90. The digital tach just kinda bothers me a little.
JJ, I wasn't as clear as I should have been. Apologies. I meant to say the last non-hybrid V-12. And the F167 may be non-hybrid, but I'm having trouble discerning that. In any event, since I'm wanting to drive something until my 296 GTS finally arrives in a couple of years, waiting for the F167 (or whatever it's eventually labelled) sort of defeats the purpose.
