I just got my 2014 Georgia registration for my 85 308

    $228.38 Ad Valorem
    $20 Tag Fee
    $35 Special tag fee

Does anybody know if antique or Historic plates are cheaper?

I called my local DMV, and she wanted to sell me a Historic plate for an additional $40 and my Ad Valorem wouldn't change.

The Georgia Motor Vehicle Ad Valorem Assessment manual page iv shows Historical Vehicles have a fixed fee of $40.

Ad Valorem remains the same. The $40 is an additional fee, just like any other special tag.

I just got word back from Georgia DMV, there is a category for Classic cars, and a significant reduction in Ad Valorem Assessment fees.

I will get the paperwork in a few days and give exact classifications for the Classic plates.

FWIW I ran an 85 308 through the tag calculator, and if bought after March 1, 2013 it's damn near $1,500. GA is trying to collect all the tax they were missing on private sales.

I wouldn't take their answer at the DMV, so I called Atlanta, and got a similar answer I went thru the tax codes, then called my county tax commissioner, he personally handed the phone to the head of my local DMV who then had to follow up on my call. I got a call from the head of my county DMV who apologized for all the miss information. That's when I learned that Georgia does have a plate for old cars at a much, much reduced rate, I think it will cost me about $35 now.
I will get the particulars soon in the mail.

Yeah the vintage or classic plate might be the best way to go, but anything newer and you're going to be screwed. This particular law really skewers car enthusiasts, and there's a lobby building to get it changed. I just sold my M3 and I'm looking for something fun to use as a daily driver. Now I have to make sure I account for the ridiculous tag tax before I buy something - to the tune of $500-1000.

If they mean the "Hobby Antique" tag, then it is "just" $35, on top of the $20 standard tag fee.

BUT, you still have to pay ad valorem, if you were already in the system (no reduction unless over 40 years, I think). So you would pay the $35 to have a plate with a Model T on it on your 85 Ferrari, if you like that look.

I am hearing different from the DMV, the proof will be in the new license billing they have sent me. If you hear me jumping for joy, the Ad valorem will be minimal, either way, I will post their correction.

I think you still have to pay TAVT based on their silly schedule that severely overvalues used vehicles. Dave Lynes had to pay something like $2000 to title a really rusty pickup his grandfather gave him. I would bet the real market value would be around $2000 for the truck, but the TAVT calculated the title on the truck value of around $25,000. It was a 1966 Dodge I think.

Edit: it is a 1968 dodge 200 truck

Ok all, she was right! My Ad Valorem was almost eliminated.

I just got my revised Registration bill:
New VID Code 00020M, New Taxable Value of $100

Ad Valorem From $228.38 to $2.61
    Tag fee From $ 20.00 to $20.00
Special tag fee From $35.00 to $35.00
    Total From $283.38 to $57.61

    Interesting. They charged me $138.00 for my 74 911, $1400.00 for my 86 328. $838.00 for my 2006 Ford F150. And I have an 84 911 I need to register this month.

Can you post the actual tax code or any phone numbers on your information you got from them? My birthday is in November and i just did my tags last week, so i think i can fight them on the 74 911 and the 84 911.

I would be happy to, (it is on the last post too), they changed my VID code and that changes your valuation probably to the minimum.

New VID Code 00020M, New Taxable Value of $100

I just bought another car and my birthday is in November too. The DOR calculator says I'm going to owe $757 for registration, which is outright robbery for a car that is 22 years old. Do you know the minimum age/year for this tag, and will I have to put up with a picture of a Model T on it?

edit...the Model T might be kind of funny considering the car I just bought. Wonder if I could personalize it.

I am not sure of the age, my guess is 25 years, check the date of Manufacture too. IE my 85 308 was built in may of 1984. Suggest you call your local DMV and ask.

I haven't been to DMV yet, but it didn't sound like I got stuck with a model A license plate

Sounds like you aren't being charged as a HV?

Just to clarify, this is an existing car that they sent you out a 2014 bill for?

I'll be interested to see if you keep the same tag you were on (I assume you had some sort of Special Interest tag), or if they move you to a different sort.

Yes, this car has been registered in GA for a couple of years. The car currently has a vanity plate on it, and they say I can keep it for an additional $35 per year. "85 308"

none has to be 25 years old

Had some interesting dealings this month.
I bought a 1970 muscle car in July. paid a new 1% tax on price paid.(1980 and earlier only) I sold the car.
I then bought another 1969. I brought my plate that I just bought in with me. I always was told not to turn them in and I never had.
They used that July plate on my new car and only charged me $5 total for transfer.

Interesting. They didn't charge you a second tax (even at the low 1% rate)

Did a quick search through the 950 page tax manual and found this one page that references OBS code 00020M

That is the key. I am going to call them in a few minutes and ask about my 84 911 I need to register, as well as why i paid so much for the 86 328 and 74 911. I dont think they will honor the 00020m VID code on the other cars, nor my new to me 84 911, as they are " new" purchases.

I think because you already owned the car, is why you got a break on the tax. I will post what they tell me. Chatham county GA.

I am looking forward to what they tell you, I have 3 older cars (2 - 1963's & 1988) that I need to register. None of these have been current since 1993 in another state.

That's how my quest went too, Friday evening we found the right person, but he was out until Monday, then he had to wade thru his "In Box" before he got to my request.
