Remember that Gene was the man who made vintage stock-car racing fashionable.

Visited his house in May 1998 having arranged for a magazine editor to try an ex Earnhardt division 2 Nascar car (whatever they were called) at the small oval across the road from Road Atlanta. He had showed up at Le Mans with IIRC Chevy Monzas and so forth very different to what the crowd there was used to seeing. Some of those cars were in his basement. He was a very gracious host that day, a nice memory. RIP Gene.

Dale Jr has mentioned Gene several times on his podcast for his help in restoring various cars he or his dad raced

His father had a great knowledge and interest in racing history, knew lots about racing in the US and Europe. The day Senna died he gave a beautiful tribute when interviewed and then went and won one of his best ever, most exciting races at Talladega. I am sure he conveyed that history appreciation to his son.

I veered a bit off topic with my post above, Gene certainly saw the historic value of old Nascar cars and built that market shrewdly which is why he agreed to have a magazine crew come and visit, try one of his cars, free publicity.
