What are my other options since the Shell transaxle 75W-90 synthetic oil is not available in small quantity. Is this different from shell spirax S 75W-90 synthetic which is available in quarts or not. The car is 1999, 550 maranello. Thanks.

Spirax S 75-90 by shell is GL5 rated and is available in US. but it is not the same as transaxle oil by shell which is GL5 rated and is not available to public in US unless you by it from ferrari for $500 in five gallons. Is there any technical differences between them, since both are made by shell and transaxle oil is aproved by ferrari and porsch.

I have used Redline's 75w-90NS and Amsoil's Severe Gear 75w-90. Both are outstanding but I like the Amsoil a little bit more.

Redline NS I have found to be, well junk! lots of metal particles at change and more gear noise, not so with Amsoil Severe Gear which is much better but best of all is Neo 70W90 RHD Super Speedway, slick shifting and quieter gear whine.

Stop driving your car and have your tranny inspected. Seriously. Gear whine in a 348 means only 1 thing, and if you drive any further you will soon find out.

+1. Love that stuff. Plus I cannot get any of the other products mentioned here without using a mail service.

No Doubt, I don't have a 348, I am referring to using these oils in a 246 Dino, a Porch Boxster S and a 550 Maranello, all these benefited from Amsoil and most specifically Neo and suffered from the use of Redline, This stuff pretty much sucks from a wear standpoint and won't be used in another of my vehicles.

+1 on the redline. I always found the gearbox temp ran hotter using the redline.

OEM shell or the Royal purple would be my choice

    Regards, Jim

How do you check the gearbox tempreture, Mutol is a race proven synthetic gear oil.

Well, I recently had my major service performed at Ferrari of Seattle, and they put in the factory Shell, stuff, and I have to admit the car shifts better now, particularly when cold. When I first changed about 2 years after the last major, I put in Redline 75w-90 NS and noticed better shifting initially, then it went back (in a few months) to being a bit tough going into 2nd when cold. Now, it shifts perfectly in 2nd when cold. Maybe it is just having fresh fluid...perhaps changing it every 18 months or so is best. But it seems to shift better now, than even right after putting the Redline in.

I positively HATE that Shell Ultra Helix 5w-40 though! Damn stuff foams so much it is really hard to read the dipstick. I will be switching back to Mobil 1 or Castrol as soon as I pass 3k or 4k miles...can't wait, but after paying $18 or $19 per quart, I hate to dump it out too soon! ;)
