What's the consensus on the best cost efficient construction for a garage (ignoring windows and aesthetics, etc) - I live in the UK, where it's relatively humid during the winter and am looking to build a new garage/unit to house 10-12 cars (which will actually be inside a huge open ended barn/agricultural building - but I'm not sure if that changes anything other than the fact that it won't get rained on/ direct sun). I'm looking to improve security and protection against humidity, dirt, birds... etc. The cheapest material is steel, you can buy big off the shelf steel sheds pretty cheaply, but obviously the temperature fluctuations inside will be huge and attract a lot of moisture. I was thinking of breeze block, insulated and then dehumidified but interested in view of people who know more than a laymen such as myself..?
insulated metal airplane hangars here in northern calif maintain a constant 50% humidity without any mechanicals. cheap too.
Bob, you may want to post this question on garagejournal . com as well. Terrific site that I learned of through Andres (abstamaria). It sounds like an interesting project, whichever way you go. Best, Dave
This is the barn it will go in. (Over the other side from the fire engine but it looks the same but empty - I just don't have a pic) - Any thoughts / ideas welcome Image Unavailable, Please Login
Start reading from here. A few more pictures of it got posted for the first time ever, and it blew everyone's mind. Hilarious to read the skeptical comments in the beginning. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/detailing-showroom/4374-garage-pics-240.html#post139505052
Not my garage, and not a domestic garage, but a garage nonetheless... Image Unavailable, Please Login
dry lay stone starting Monday. 200 tons. 4,000 sq. ft. will take more than a month. architect 3D drawings attached. I am stopping the contractor as soon as building inspection gets passed. he has lied and padded the bills so much I cannot deal with the stress any more. winter is here so a new contractor will finish the garage next summer. This is our place away from high tech. You are going the opposite direction in a spectacular way
will become my home. mom will be 100 Jan. 11. she will not be here forever although it would be wonderful. I am still a mommy's boy. never married, no children. so I am pissing away a lot of money. after being in a hospital every year for 16 years and right now trying to get cancer in total remission(will know Dec. 2) this will get rid of 1.2 million. fixing cars has gotten rid of 1/2 million in the last year. that will leave a chunk for this recluse. what you cannot see in the 3D is a wine cellar, hidden fire pole and other BS. next spring I will post progress under my threat.
