There seems to be a disconnect between the video and reality.

I went to the large Mercedes dealer in Munich 3 weeks ago to inquire about buying a new G400D. I was politely told that Mercedes G production is sold out for 2022 and 2023 and they will not accept a deposit for one, or even take my name or number for inquiries about 2024 cars. Dealers in Italy are sold out for the next year and will not take deposits either. The Munich dealer had one slightly used example which had been sold - amazingly at a price in excess of its new price.

Half the year I am in the UAE, where the used market has tons of G class cars for sale. The issue is that even here, low mileage used examples of the new model are close to the list price of a new one.

I usually have 2 or 3 of these overpriced chuck wagons in the shop on any given day of the week. Pure cash grab by Mercedes. They look cool tho. And the squared version is pretty damn cool in the Brabus trim. But as a vehicle they are useless.

Here in Dubai, they are really, really plentiful. The local online ad site has 500(!) of them for sale on any given day.

Given that it is a pretty small country with two main concentrated population centres and maybe one in 10 or one in 20 of them are for sale at any given moment, that is 5-10,000 G class Mercs; nearly all are AMG versions. From the coffee shop patio where I am writing this post I can see 2 G63s. That many people would not have them if they were so unreliable or hard to live with.

I have driven a few of the supercharged G55 and G63 V8s. Silly fun, but even here the fuel for a G63 is prohibitive if you drive a lot.

I want one for my place in Europe to tow a trailer, but, given Italian prices for premium fuel, a diesel.
