Do Lucas or Gumout fuel system cleaners (the kind you just pour a bottle of stuff in the gas tank) actually work or do they do more harm then good? I saw a bottle of the stuff at the store today and was just wondering.

I use Chevron Techron in all of my fuel injected cars, old and new. I add a bottle to a tank of gas periodically, and the engines run great. Just remember to put it in before you fill up, so it mixes with the gas. I can't vouche for any other stuff, but IMHO, Techron is worth using.

Probably the best system cleaner you will ever find is Marvel Mystery Oil. HOWEVER, be prepared to deal with totally clogged fuel filters depending on the gunk in the system. MMO will definitely clean the system/injectors but all that gunk will end up in the fuel filter. I have had personal experience with this on several occasions. In one case MMO cleaned the gunk so well that a fuel filter would clog to the point that after 20 minutes the engine would only idle. Took 6 filter changes to finally get the job done/system cleaned. But it sure as heck works.

I don't use techron for the opposite reason... How can it selectively clean fuel injectors without cleaning anything else? Does it employ some sort of magic? Does it alter the laws of physics? Naw, it's all about marketing, not reality.

The only legitimate fuel system cleaners in a bottle are based on polyether amines (PEAs).
Chevron calls theirs "Techron". The other is fuel system cleasner from Redline.

People, so many opinions on cleaners, its realy hard to decide/discriminate. MMO? Why would MMO destroy/dislodge crud where regular gasoline aditive cleaners cant? Whats so special about MMO? Its been said its not a Mystery (well, maybe its ingredients are a mystery to most people), its not Marvelous (except for the placebo effect), nor is it Oil (its not a long term lubricant).

Wheres the scientific proof, people? techron? I dont buy it. never will. Mikes point on marketing is right on.

MMO is a very strong detergent. I make no other claims for it.

The problem with it - and other strong detergents - is that they cannot differentiate between cleaning the fuel injector tips and cleaning gunk in the fuel tank, the lines, etc. Somehow Techron is claimed to be able to clean the injectors but somehow doesn't clean anything else with the resultant clogged fuel filters. Maybe Techron should buy the copyright for the term "MMO" and call it MAGICAL Mystery Oil." :)
