I've owned my Ferrari for 9 years trouble free and finally it decided to behave oddly.

It has recently come to my attention that my front trunk just pops open each time I switch the car off and shut the drivers door. No later than about 5 seconds "pop". Each and everytime.

If I leave the car running or have the key switched to ignition, exit the car, shut the door, the front trunk wont pop open, but soon as the ignition is off or the car no longer running ,shut the door, "pop" she goes.

What makes it really odd is that when I have the trickle charger on, the bonnet will not pop open by itself when the car is off. Switch off the trickle charger and she will pop open by itself. So I changed the 5 year old battery to a new one and yet the problem persists. Played with the rubbers inside the front trunk that align the bonnet and they had no impact on the issue.

The trunk is not meant to open without the key in the ignition, the switch to open it doesnt work until there is power. Just like the fuel cap. So for the bonnet to keep popping open without power is a complete mystery.

A short circuit somewhere or misbehaving lock mechanism? dodgy relay? any idea what it could be or how to diagnose the problem?

The problem occurred when I parked it back home after a 100km/60 mile spirited drive.

    Cheers

Very odd indeed. After reading your post, I see that you state that the frunk switch in the console will not work when the key is off. FWIW, in my '03 360, the fuel door switch needs the key on for it to activate the fuel door to open. Not the case for the frunk switch. The switch will pop the frunk with the key off or the key on. Maybe read the owner's manual to see what the proper "wiring" of the switches should be.

It always seemed off to me that the fuel door could only be opened by the key being in the on position, but the frunk could be opened with the key in the off position. Seems like that's kind of backwards to me. Sorry I couldn't offer more on your problem. Until you diagnose it, maybe just disconnect the switch for now and use the cable handle under the dash to manually open the frunk.

Agree with above, does the trunk pop open when the trunk switch is disconnected? As in.. pulled out and completely unplugged from its connector... If so, could simply be a bad switch. Otherwise, have you removed the frunk lock mechanism? Could be a microswitch is stuck.

Any updates or solutions? My 360 has the exact some problem. Frunk pops open after switching engine off, just after being serviced and detailed. Thanks in advance.

@ebarnold Do you have a Spider or Modena?

The Spider Owner's Manual does say that the key is required:

    Image Unavailable, Please Login

The instrument panel determines if the logic is good for opening (vehicle speed less than 5kph ...and ignition on (for Spider)). Why turning off the ignition would specifically activate the frunk release, is a complete mystery. It seems illogical that a relay would suddenly start playing up with the ignition turned off.

Pushing the button sends an earth to the Instrument Panel.. and the instrument panel sends on that earth if the logic is correct. It's possible that there is a stray earth getting to the relay.... but again, why only when the ignition is turned off?

Thanks. I have a Modena - the key is required for the center console button to release the hood. So it really is odd that it would be activated specifically when the key is removed from the ignition. I’ll try to make more sense if it if I can get out this weekend. Thanks again

I have noticed when I forget to plug in the battery tender and the battery charge is low my frunk will "pop" open when I turn the key- even if there is enough charge to start the engine. it doesnt happen when the battery is charged.
