Have a 2000 456M GTA and just had some work done replacing upholstery and first time I go to move the passenger seat forward, its stuck in the forward-most position with the seat reclining forward, i.e., so nobody can sit in the front. So the passenger seat motor is still running when the car gets juice, I think its just stuck trying to go forward (I think maybe the upholstery guys kept pushing it forward and it just messed it up?)

I removed the fuse and waited and put it back in but nothing, I've googled the forums and know the potentiometer is a big fail point, you guys think that's it? Anything other easy things I can do to potentially solve problem? I've read there's possibly a disconnect switch for the seat, right under it, but I can't seem to locate it because the seat is up so forward.. Thanks in advance for any assistance, trying to avoid another big $$$ bill...

Is the fore/aft motor or the recline motor running? The potentiometer is only for recline (see Item 11 in the diagram below). The fore/aft motor and the other motors have inbuilt Hall sensors for position feedback.

I'm guessing the upholsterers don't have the knowledge to fix what they broke.

I'm not overly familiar with the controls. Do you need to manually tilt the seat to its fully forward position before it triggers the forward movement of the seat base?

There are 3 microswitches associated with the seat tilt (easy entry system). One, I believe triggers forward motion of the seat.. i.e. switch 3M.

Having said that, the WSM does say that the motor should stop running if it hits an obstacle. I assume this includes the seat track endstops.

Anyway, make sure these switches haven't been squashed with the new seat leather.

I have a wiring diagram for the driver's seat, but the passenger seat should be similar.

    Experts?

Thanks for the response; 'Is the fore/aft motor or the recline motor running?' I'm not sure, how can I tell? All I know it, it seems to be stuck pushing the seat forward and reclining forward as well. When there's no power/when I took the fuse out and tried to manually recline the seat back with the latch it doesn't do anything, it's just stuck hard in the most forward declining position..

'Do you need to manually tilt the seat to its fully forward position before it triggers the forward movement of the seat base?' I can't get any movement at all its just stuck in the forward most position with the motors whirling.. Normally, it just moves forward with having the tilt in a specific position. Anyhow I'm wondering if just disconnecting the seat from the control unit will do anything, but not sure where that is (I know its right under seat but having hard time accessing anything because the seat is stuck in the most forward position), anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance...

I meant to say, what happens on the driver's side when you do this?

Good question. The recline motor is Item 8 in the graphic above. Since access is limited, I guess you would only know by sticking a stethoscope or plastic tube to the motor and your ear. There are two fore/aft motors in series (Item 11).

I think this issue has happened before. Maybe try searching this forum.

The driver's side is fine (fingers crossed) and is not experiencing any issues at the moment... It seems that both the fore/aft motor and recline motors are running? Does that make sense/is possible?

Yeah I've googled the forum up and down and all I can find is 1) either its the potentiometer issues and detailed steps on how to fix that, 2) anything other than that has been just I took it to the shop and they fixed it.. I'm wondering if there could be an in-between situation where its not the potentiometer but something that is DIY fixable...

And when is the motor triggered? As soon as you push the manual release button or when the seat back is at a certain angle? Is the decline assisted with a motor?

Have you tried pushing the memory switches on the faulty seat? Do you have any saved settings?

The motor is triggered as soon as put the key in the turn it, it became like that the first time I used the button to move the seat forward from getting back from upholsters.. There's no memory switches on the passenger side, I just tried pressing the driver side ones after the car gets power but nothing, it just keeps whirling and not moving back or reclining...

I'm trying to establish what is normal. i.e. what is the behaviour on the driver's side. This may tell us which components are faulty on the passenger side.

No I get it/appreciate, the other seat isn't doing anything. As soon as the car gets power, the passenger side motor starts whirling and its trying to push the seat forward? Except it can't go forward anymore..

I think something has been lost in translation. What is the driver's seat doing. "Nothing"? Or is it working normally? What is normal?

When is the driver's seat forward motion triggered ... when the easy entry knob is moved or when the seat is at a certain angle? Is the tilt asssisted by a motor?

When does the driver's seat stop moving (at the forward endstop or short of the endstop, perhaps at a position programmed by you or the factory). Does the recline motor and the fore/aft motor operate simultaneously after being triggered?

Driver seat is working normally, there's a maximum forward point it stops and same moving backwards.. Recline motor and fore/aft motor usually moves separately, like you move one or the other.

Just to clarify... (Sorry, I had to edit my last question). Does the Easy Entry knob cause the tilt motor to assist the tilting of the seat. The microswitches involved in this system have caused issues before. I'm more concerned about the Easy Entry automatics, not the operation of the buttons on the seat base. I would hope that the upholsterers wouldn't have damaged the manual seat controls (although I don't want to rule that out completely).

If you saw that the Easy Entry seat movement was going to crush something, how would you stop it? Can it be stopped by letting go of the Easy Entry knob or can't the seat forward motion be stopped?

No the tilting or the forward/back for the seat does not work (stuck in the forward position with the motors whirling when car gets power). The other two buttons, like sliding the seat in the out/back direction and up/down directions still work as usual..

Thanks. That gives us something to work with.

What do you mean by "usually"? Do you mean there are times when they don't move separately (when the seats are working normally)?

456M owners: I’m trying to establish what is normal operation for the Easy Entry function.

When is the driver's seat forward motion triggered ... when the Easy Entry knob is immediately moved or when the seat is at a certain angle? Is the tilt asssisted by a motor during Easy Entry operation?

When does the driver's seat stop moving during Easy Entry operation (at the forward endstop or short of the endstop, perhaps at a position programmed by you or the factory). If the recline motor is activated during Easy Entry operation, does the recline motor and the fore/aft motor operate simultaneously after being triggered?

During Easy Entry operation, when does the driver's seat stop moving (at the forward endstop or short of the endstop, perhaps at a position programmed by you or the factory). Does the recline motor and the fore/aft motor operate simultaneously after being triggered?

How is the seat returned to the normal position after Easy Entry operation? Is the Easy Entry knob pushed in the opposite direction (if that is possible)? Again, is the recline motor activated? Do you have to keep your finger on the Easy Entry knob to control the movement (for recline and aft movement). If the sequence is automatic, how do you stop the seat moving during Easy Entry operation if, say, your seat starts to crush something in the footwell or behind the seat?

I'm trying to understand why there are 3 microswitches AND a potentiometer in the seat back recline system and whether or not the potentiometer is involved in the Easy Entry operation. The potentiometer may be involved in returning the seat to its original position (assuming it does go back to the original position).

So I said usually because most of the time you're just pressing one part of the button; either the reclining or the forward/back. Now if you were to press both at once I think they would both move, eg recline and move back or forward at the same time, I just can't test it now because in office..

Appreciate your continued responses, there actually 4 movements that correspond with buttons; the reclining part, back/forward, seat up/down, seat out/in.. One section has 3 of these reclining, back/forward, out/in.. The button that moves seat up and down is separate from the rest..

I'm not exactly sure of this Easy Entry, there's just a major panel on the side that controls reclining, back/forward and seat out/in.. When you press those buttons normally nothing is automatic it only is suppose to move when you are pressing any of the buttons..

Here's what is supposed to happen (although it still doesn't quite explain microswitch operation)

    Image Unavailable, Please Login
Because of that last paragraph, lever E seems to have electrical as well as mechanical properties. However, there are no microswitches shown in the wiring diagram for this lever.... The microswitches in the parts manual are shown at the bottom of the seat back.

Does the lever only move in one direction?

Is the sentence "press again lever E or use the adjustment pushbuttons to allow the seat to complete its movement" only refer to when the seat is mechanically blocked?

I assume the rear safety threshold is set up by the factory with an SD tool.

Thanks for diagrams, very helpful... E lever can only be opened one way, like you pull it out, can't push in. Where are these microswitches you speak of? I looked carefully on the back of seat and do not see one.. There is a track for the seats, so the beginning/end threshold is just to the end or beginning of the track. I'm thinking this is a bit too complicated to troubleshoot myself, might take it to local shop that works on Ferraris (not authorized dealer) and see what they say...

The diagram in post #2 shows the approximate location. I only have a photo of switch 1M

I just realised there is a cable drive from the Easy Access lever "E" to the microswitch.

Is it obvious how to get the leather coverplates off? I would at least try to inspect these switches before paying $$$

I could possibly get the leather covers off, but what would I be looking for? Like where's the microswitch in that picture? Also isn't there a seat disconnect under the seat? I've read maybe disconnecting that and replugging might do the trick, but I'm not sure where it is, would you have a picture of that?

    The orange things....

... but they may be other colours.

Since leatherwork has been done, I would be looking for leather jamming the cam attached to the cable or leather interfering with the microswitch arms.

It would be great if you could get a photo of the other side, but the centre console might make it difficult.
