seems like my front hood latch button is getting worse and worse. it sometimes takes a few pushes or even more now to get the hood to unlock. what can it be?? a bad relay?/ is it normal to go on these cars???

The switch, connections, etc. are famous for giving series 2 owners all kinds of fits.

    Trace and clean everything.

Is it really a button? Mine is a chrome lever under the dash. Opens easily the first time I give it a gentle tug.

Others mention a relay but it is a solenoid that actually does the work (I have an '84 400i). It is located under the cowl just below the wiper levers. It is pretty accessible. It actuates cables to each of the two latches. There are adjustments to the cables. With the hood open you can test the actuation of the solenoid, cables and the latches (2 person job). Use a Phillips screw driver or similar round shaft that is the diameter of the rod that is on the hood. Push the shaft down into the latch (one side at a time) like you were locking the hood down but it is only the screw driver getting locked in! Then have your assistance push the button and the screw driver should POP up out of the latch. You can also test the manual cables this way, as either one should do the same. This test method should allow you to try all kinds of adjustments and tests without the hassle of opening and closing the hood.

I am having a little bit of a sticking problem with my release now, but it is more some "sticktion" in the safety latch. Mine actually releases but I need to lift it because the safety catch is holding it down.

It is a little left of center (by direction of car), so right cable is a bit longer than the left. It is below and a bit behind the wiper arm levers. It is about 1 1/2 to 2" in size and I think gray in color. It was not really hard to find once my box showed where it was at.
