As I mentioned in an earlier thread, I am currently working with my dealer on configuring a new 2015 458 Italia. Another post factory option my dealer has highly recommended is a skid plate under the front bumper (see attached link). Given that I am getting the front suspension lift option, does anyone feel this is necessary? I must concede, I am not really going to drive the car frequently (yeah, I'm going to be one of those owners). When I do take it out for a spin, I will always know precisely where I am going, and I will know what I may be encountering ahead (speed bumps, steep angles, etc.). having said all of that, the thing that makes my stomach turn is the idea of a post factory piece being riveted onto the front bumper. If it was a factory option, I probably wouldn't think twice about getting it. I have a fixation on the car being totally pure and stock from the factory. I would love anyone's opinion, or anecdotes on when these skid guards came in handy (or would have, if you had them). Particularly, if you already use the front suspension lift. Thank you.

Though the 458 has a lot more front clearance than the older V8s, I would opt for the skid plate as insurance.

A story: Six months ago, my new FF arrived in my hands from the dealer with a complimentary skid plate under the front lip. I didn't order it and wouldn't have opted for it, since the FF has a pretty high stance. But the dealer presented it as a positive thing they were doing. I forgot about it; it just became part of the car. A week ago I took a dip a little too quickly and contacted the skid plate. I don't know if I would have hit the lip itself if I didn't have the plate, but I was glad to have it.

I have both front lift and skid plate. I am quite over the top about the car and think if cannot do front lift in time, or more likely an unexpected bump / dip, the skid plate can do its job. As know, the front lift only works up to about 25-30 mph.

Thanks for the feedback. Again, I totally understand the rationale. I'm just not certain I need it, given that I will have the lift, and I will be ultra neurotic about where I take it. Most importantly, I can't seem to get past the idea that something non-stock from the factory is bolted on my car.

Funny thing is - Ferrari could charge 5k for it as an option from the factory, and I would buy it. Guess were all a bit nuts. HA.

No front skid plate or lifter, no problems last 2 years. Big difference from my F430, which scraped often. I really think the lifter is an unnecessary option, and I am one not to skimp on options.

Are you a light, moderate or heavy driver of your car? Also, do you just take it out without much thought, or do you know ahead of time what road slopes and conditions you will face before you go for a drive?

For me both things should be always present in this cars.
My cars are always lowered and I am very careful but being able to lift the front is a beauty for me.
This problem was terrible in old 430,s then with the scuderia front facia the problem was reduced but not elliminated.
F front facias should be made of plastic and not fiber like in some models because they are very heavy and under some road bumps they make the suspension to travel to the road and hard to repair.

BTW FF has front and rear lifter this would be great in other cars not just front.

Thanks again for the feedback. At this point, I'm going to pass on the skip plate. Again, I can't get past the idea of having holes drilled into the underside of my car. Given that I am getting the suspension lift, and how intensely conservative I will be with my driving habits, I think I will be find. I will be getting the clear bra applied, but only because it can removed without altering the car.

I understand. You can't stand the thought of putting screw holes into your baby, even if it is in the underside. :)

I have a feeling many who own one of these amazing machines/works of art, can relate to my concerns.

If you have lift you don't need it and even without the lift, the only thing to watch for are parking blocks (some are higher than others). Best

Not needed at all. The lifter does the trick you are much more likely to hit the rear diffuser fins which is so common most dealers will sand them down and re paint them. The 430 was

Does anyone have a good lead on where to get a nice skid plate other than the dealer?

I had the dealer install a skid plate. I do not have a front lifter and I've never scraped or needed it (the lifter or the skid plate). But as others said it's good insurance. The dealer is a bit of a rip, I think they charged me around $850 for the skid plate installed. You can do it for much less with a different skid plate and install yourself if you have the time. I used to scrape my 360 front bumper a lot, the 458 scrapes much less. The front wheels must be closer to the front bumper giving it better clearance on slopes.

Interesting that you were charged for it -- and that much. As I mentioned in an earlier post, my dealer put it on gratis without my asking. It is these little things that differentiate dealers and how they treat customers.

On the one hand, it was good of your dealer not to charge you. On the other hand, I would absolutely freak out if my dealer bolted an aftermarket piece onto my car without my authorization.
