A reputable body shop told me (over the phone site unseen) that in order to respray (grigio silverstone) and repair my front bumper, it would be necessary to also respray the front fenders and hood in order to get the color to match.

The need to respray the hood and front fenders to get a match is surprising to me given what I have read--but I am not expert. Any opinions on this?

The less sprayed the better, IMO.

I'd find someone to match exactly, it's no big deal..

"Blending" into adjacent panels is no longer required, IMO.

I agree but that's no reason to keep spraying.

The various body materials take color differently anyway, and flex additives can take it one way or the other.

It's a bumper, everyone knows it's a bumper. Personally I can see "paint work" more noticibly, than a color shift at a body seam line.

Ferrari of Houston matches colors EXACTLY with their paint computer it's pretty amazing.
But a lot of Supply Houses are scanning now in a similar manner.

Best of luck, whatever YOU choose!

If they can't match the bumper to the hood and fenders, what will the fenders look like next to the doors? If they can't match it in one place there will always be a difference unless you do a total respray. Silver is hard to match, but I would rather have the bumper different than the whole front of the car. It would sure look to some people that the car had been hit up front if the fenders and hood don't match the rest of the car.

Thanks for the responses. They are super constructive in helping me think about it. Although I think some of you probably know this, the color is sort of a dark grey (grigio silverstone) not sure if that makes it easier or harder than silver....

We have had the bumper of our BMW 545i painted and it matched perfectly. I was worried because it is a metallic but......spot on. I would check around. I can't speak for Ferrari Dealerships but....when I worked at a dealer we regularly had a guy come in and paint the bumpers of the lot cars.

Really no different than another color, in my mind.

    Sunlight effects them all.

I pulled some racing logos off my single stage red, and underneath it was a surprisingly richer shade even after only two years.

But I think if you find the right shop (computer scan color matching) you will be pleasantly surprised with the results.

OTOH, I used to have a long time painter that was REALLY good, too. He would take the "Factory Pack" of materials, spray a test, then see how it cured and tint accordingly.
But those greybeard wizards are all hanging up the wand!

I've had the front bumper and area between the bumper and hood of my 328 resprayed and it is a perfect match (Rosso Corsa).

I've also had the front bumper of my BMW resprayed and it's a darker metallic gray and it turned out perfectly.

Forgot to add - while I was interviewing shops to paint the Ferrari bumper, all the shops except one said they would have to respray the whole car from the front of the doors forward. One shop said they could easily match and blend and they were right. Saved me a pile of money and the car looks great.

Silver shades and pearl whites are the toughest to match. I use to own a shop and never blended into the fenders or hood on a car but once every few months when painting a bumper in either of the two colors they just wouldn't match up to the rest of the car well. Its a pain in the ass to respray it and reinstall it so only if it was a really bad match would we redo it.

Perhaps explain to them you know if may come out slightly different but prefer not to refinish any of the other parts. If it really doesn't match then you can tell them you will pay 50% bonus for their 2nd attempt but only after you see the first and it's not up to your standard.

As mentioned when painting bumpers you have to add a flex additive so the paint can bend. Even though this is a very small amount it can change the paint slightly. A good painter should be able to match up the paint with the rest of the car before he starts painting so you could also offer a $100 cash incentive to the painter and manager so they spend an extra 5 minutes to make sure the paint does match up perfect.

Exactly. It also means they're probably gouging in the first place. Make sure you shop around a bit.

As a result of all the help I have asked some other good body shops for quote. Understandably, they were reluctant to give any firm estimates without seeing the car, none of them have suggested a reapray of the front fenders and hood.

It will take a few weeks or so, but once I get the car in I'll report back.

    Thanks again!

IMO removing the bumper is the best way of doing it. Also when i had my bumpers resprayed, i specifically went to a shop that used OIL based instead of Water based paint.

    LOL!

I used to go into the Booth, to watch them shoot, but I was young and foolish then!

.....of course it's all water based now, maybe that's better!

I don't think you can 'huff' water based systems....

Find the shop that fixes the shipping damage for the local Mercedes dealer in your town, and go to them: They match more silver paint than anyone else you'll find.
