The weather has dramatically changed in just a few hours. Its much warmer. Temp right now is 72 degrees at 9:30 in the morning. When I left the track last night about 1 Am it was in the 40's. Expected high today in the mid 70's. It beautiful.... BUT-- The wind is picking up and it must be from the South. We are getting wind advisories for this afternoon and until the middle of the night tonight. It all depends on the direction of the wind but it could really play havoc. The problem is the buildings magnify the wind and make it unstable. If the wind is South to North its probably going to have a strong effect on top speed down the Strip. But the real problems will be at the corner of the Strip and Harmon and Sands and the Strip. The air could go from zero to gusting in just a few yards. Should be warmer tonight though.
I just drove around a bit. The wind is "breezy" but I think its going to get much worse this afternoon and evening. The wind is definitely blowing South to North, which means its coming straight up the Strip into the driver's faces. Driving West to East, every time I passed a cross street the wind guts were strong. Liked to blow my hat off with the top down. Its warm however. Normally the wind would blow west to east. This is really unusual. If this continues I can see a couple of potential disaster areas. The worst is probably the 90 degree turn from Sands and the Strip. The cars could be hit with some really strong gusts just as they try to accelerate down the long straight. The other would be the turn East on Harmon. Could go from buffeting to no breeze at all in just a few meters. The last I see could be the turn from Harmon to the Pit straight. Loss of downforce in an instant. Should be interesting how they handle it.
I guess this wind is related to the big storm on the west coast? Yes the smell thing seemed a bit far fetched. At Le Mans drivers can smell camp fires and barbecues but...you'd need an army smoking weed for the smell to noticeably reach the track.
I can (and regularly do) smell weed from several blocks away, with little wind. so I can see drivers smelling it in the car. the smell really hangs in the air
Ok I know nothing about that, never touched a cigarette let alone illegal drugs, the only time I was knowingly exposed to it was at a pool party my first time in the US in...summer 1981, in Fairfield Connectictut. Locals offered it. A Parisian friend tried it and a little later we noticed he was at the bottom of the pool, smiling seemingly asleep. We pulled him out, he was awake eyes closed, mumbling a bit, so we laid him on the grass and poured icewater on him...he barely reacted, just giggled, but was fine as if dreaming. I remember no smell though. One thing: an hour or so later when I went home to my host family on my borrowed bicycle I went down a big hill absolutely flat out, faster than ever...perhaps the smell I did not sense, breathing that air, had an effect on my lack of fear...? Hadn't thought about that day in decades...
Zero wind at the Strip. Quite warm. Shirtsleeve weather. From what I can see it’s the same at T-Mobile and Koval ave. Temps today were in the 70’s! Image Unavailable, Please Login
I just walked from the Strip to T mobile / Sphere. There is a breeze up Koval that is fairly strong. As the cars pass here going West it could be an issue. Also another bit of wind heading West to the Strip on Sands. A bit of buffeting around the Sphere. I have a feeling the wind will increase as the temp drops. Seems to be picking up a bit. the wind patterns are inconsistent. Shifty and gusty at times. It’s possible to catch the drivers off guard. Also they will be getting a tow as the exit The Sphere to the corner of Sands and the Strip. Look for cars going into the overrun area or failing to make the corner and hit the barrier. the good news is it’s warm. Probably mid 60’s at the track. People enjoying themselves.
