Before Canada the majority of passes this season were due to differences in tire wear. Yesterday too many passes were due to DRS.

That race made me very happy, think I'll be watching that again if i get chance. Bit disappointed Schumacher could hold on for at least a podium but the mclaren and red bull were just too good in the dry.

Is that a bad thing? Still better than a procession of cars not being able to overtake because of dirty air.

Another option is to remove all downforce so the car behind can get close enough to slipstream. hmmmmmmmm

That would be much better and more fair to me. Remove the diffusrers alltogether, shouldn't reduce the dirty air greatly?

DRS is brilliant since it counteracts the "dirty air" and frontal washout effects these cars suffer from. Short of banning all the aero this was the best thing they ever came up with.

As for the sitting duck comment: the rules are the same for everybody and as seen in Turkey drivers with fresh tires just take the position back on the next lap

The DRS is not applied equally. While they do help solve the dirty air problem they need to be available to all cars when available to any.

Yes its kind of a artificial aid but everyone has it so equality is achieved.
In some forms of racing you dont want to be in the lead on the last lap because of the slip-streaming/slingshot effect.

Activating KERS for the trailing car only would accomplish the same.

Just another strategy the F1 boys have to work out.
All in all its a plus.

One has to wonder how many fans F1 are picking up due to more passing. I am sure they are seeing this as more of a win than ever before, while many of the more hardcore fans see it is superficial racing. They must appeal to the masses...... Didn't we hear somewhere that this season is basically picking up where it left off at Abu Dhabi with record viewers?

Trouble is, that would put us right back at square one again - Leading car deploys it and no more overtaking.

No. I wouldn't have made it otherwise.
Any arbitrary rule that allows any competitor an advantage over another is unsporting. Why not allow all drivers to use DRS at the same time? It would facilitate passing as it does now but not artificially handicap the lead car.

Not really. If cars are being held up by dirty air only they'd be able to make the pass.

Aerodynamics is not my strong field, but I don't think that DRS solves the dirty air problem. What it does is introduce a variable drag/downforce trade off, giving a topspeed advantage to the one who has his wing open. If everyone was allowed to use DRS all the time, everyone would have the same advantage*, and we'd be back at square 1, as the others already said.

*apart from differences in the DRS implementation, that is - MB seems to gain some 5km/h more than everyone else.

While I agree it could be seen as an unfair advantage, it's not just dirty air, it's that they're too evenly matched - I can catch you, but then I'm stuck...... If you can then deploy your DRS I'm not gonna get past.

I was "heartbroken" at the way the boys went by Michael, but the fans spoke, and the "fans" wanted more overtaking. So here we are.

    Cheers,
    Ian

Its my understanding tha it does address the dirty air issue. If that's the case would you feel differently?

Too evenly matched? While that may be frustrating its a poor reason to handicap the leading driver. It may boil down to a matter of the sport vs the show.

I believe you're mistaken Dave :)eek:)

As Florian said, it reduces downforce & hence drag and increases top speed by ~20kph. I can then get by your sorry ass! ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian

Absolutely!..... The fans spoke and the fans wanted more overtaking.

The purist in me hates it, but it does seem to have improved the show.

    Hence the poll! ;)

    Cheers,
    Ian
