    Fulvio,
Great letter. The Professor must have been an important person in Ferrari's world to get a personal letter. What car was he looking for and did you have one?

I got a fairly coherent translation to English from Google: http://preview.tinyurl.com/7xp3tkm . What I get is that the story dates from July 1993 and it reports a bust of LM, GTO and P3 builders in Cremona and Modena. Regarding the three suspects whom the Modena police department would identify: "they are two owners of auto repair shops in Modena (Silvano Cantelli, 58, and Egidio Brandoli, 53), and a body shop in Cremona Fulvio Visioli of 47 years."

Thanks much for the translation. I have bits and pieces of info on cases of fake Ferraris being built and sold for profit. The four Dubbinni brothers come to mind as well as another case in Cuneo, Italy. There is of course the case of the 250GTO owner who built the exact reproduction of his car and got away competing with it in historic events for several years so as not to risque the "real one". Maybe some day someone will research and write what could be a fascinating volume on some of these efforts. Times have changed over the years which make it more difficult now to pull off this kind of thing. Here is a possible title. Fake Ferrari sale busted on the Orient Express. just one man's opinion tongascrew

PUBLISHED ------------------------ ------------------------- ------ The suspicions of the House of Maranello are discovering a fraud to the detriment of international amateurs of "Red" TITLE: False Ferrari 's time paid six billion Denounced mechanics and body shop in Cremona and Modena Cars "fake" copies almost perfect: a rebuilt 250, Testarossa '54 ----------------------------------- MODENA. But this time the forgers have actually invaded the sphere of 'unthinkable. In 'list of "excellent fakes" have sprouted red Ferrari cars more' famous and courted the world. Object of desire for wealthy collectors, fans and especially ambitious. It 'was discovered a false market in classic car' era of the Prancing Horse, perfectly reproduced in any particolae. Virtually identical to the originals. It (looks a bit '), this parallel market of Ferrari "fake" had a very central location right in Modena, the city' where the "Drake" Enzo Ferrari gave birth to and thrive on the myth of "Red roaring." The flying squad of police headquarters in Modena has unmasked an 'organization who made false Ferrari and resold in various corners of the world, especially in Switzerland, Great Britain, the United States and Japan. The models most 'copied were those of the Years' 50 and' 60: the "legendary" P3, the GTO, the 246 Dino, the 250 Le Mans. All cars d 'era are now rare that today are invaluable: the hundreds of millions to one billion. Aggiudicarsene For one, some fans would follies. The 'police operation led to the termination of eight people: among these, six mechanics and body shops (some of whom were employees of the Ferrari in the past or still have had contact with the Maranello), who now will have to answer infringement of industrial designs covered by trademark. Two other complaints (for receiving) involve two Swiss nationals, who were the buyers of cars "fake". In late yesterday evening, investigators had published the generality 'of only three reported: they are two owners of auto repair shops in Modena (Silvano Cantelli, 58, and Egidio Brandoli, 53), and a body shop in Cremona Fulvio Visioli of 47 years. On disposal of the deputy prosecutor at the district court in Modena, Claudia Santini, were also seized 10 fake Ferrari in various workshops, some of which were still being built. Among the 'other, and' was also discovered the forgery of a 250 Testarossa 1954. The 'original car, on the amateur market, and' evaluated several billion. And among the papers of the 'workshop of Silvano Cantelli, were also found in the original plans and drawings of many cars' era Ferrari, which had evidently been stolen from the archives of Maranello. The 'police investigation and' taken on the recommendation of the directors of Ferrari, who had noticed some anomalies and the "flower" of too many models including the "Red" 's age on the international market. And officials of the House of Maranello worked alongside investigators. The first track, and 'was identified in' workshop Cantelli, where and 'are found in a 250 Le Mans, a perfect copy (including the chassis number) of an original property' of the Cremonese. Just for that 'car, the Ferrari had come from Cremona numerous requests for permission to rebuild the parts were damaged in the alleged incidents. The 'insistence has aroused the suspicions of Britain. Controls most 'careful then have revealed that the clone discovered in Modena was not an isolated case and that this "underworld" of copies already' was proliferating. According to investigators, in 'workshop Cantelli was built the chassis of the cars, after that' Egidio Brandoli in the warehouse, always near Modena, was assembled and the body was made the painting. In Cremona, then, the engine was assembled, meticulously reconstructed. The cars 'bootleg' were so 'ready to be shipped to' foreign and fool the experts. They were almost exact copies, except for some special "elusive" volumes slightly different frame materials and modern construction too. The crew reported they shout their good faith: "We thought they were required to duplicate that collectors do not ruin the original, perhaps to exposures or races between cars of 'vintage', they are defended. Investigators suspect, however, 'that the turnover of Ferrai "fake" was quite lucrative, though perhaps the mechanics who built the false "Red" would have picked up only the crumbs of international business. Stefano Marchetti ------------------------- ---------------------- PUBLISHED -------- TITLE: So many battles to protect the horse ---------------------------------- - How has the Ferrari to dismantle the 'organization that falsified supercars of the 50 and 60? "We have supplied. Say in Maranello. All data that could be useful to the 'inquiry'. Practically from the archives of Ferrari came the chassis numbers and engine, the 'year of manufacture' s name and address of the first owner of the supercar that you were investigating. And from there 'have left investigators to uncover the international trafficking of counterfeit supercars. "But we have not yet decided whether to promote legal action to protect the Horse. Maranello to explain .. First we would like to see the documents, seized car". Would not be the first time that Ferrari takes legal action to defend the mark by speculators and counterfeiters. In Great Britain had seized a fake GTO and four more being built. In the U.S. blockade 'a Daytona white spider that some traders were smuggling as original. In Switzerland it was discovered that trade in some Ferrari that had nothing to do with thoroughbred Ferrari. P. Art

All those cars had all the proper docs and they were correct Ferrari!
BUt as you know before the true story came out, the newspapers had the time for writing badly about me . now I decided to show and to tell the true story about me.

I recall this and other stories that occurred around 1989 when Ferrari shut its archive "doors" to the public. Shortly after Enzo's passing, car prices escalated quickly. Buyers were going to the Ferrari parts departments around Modena, Italy and buying full sets of ricambi such lights and trim; literally everything was being purchased.

While a driving accident would require one or two parts for the repair, these buyers were purchasing full sets which aroused suspicion. Then it was discovered that copies were being made with Ferrari Original parts based on build sheets obtained from the Ferrari Factory.
