A few pounds from one component would make little to no difference, but that's not what some of us here are doing.

Precisely why this thread's scope needs to be broadened since this thread was specific to a single component.

I am in the process of crafting/starting the new thread - Happy to stand down if anyone else prefers to.

    Cheers :)

Now I understand garage queens. The owners are minimizing the mas of the vehicle by keeping it stationary. :)

The bracket would give it a few lbs more for a fair comparison. My new revised Larini muffler, with revised brackets along with added inconel insulation weighs roughly 27 lbs.

    :)

Right, Scott. But a Challenge car doesn't have the "high pitch Formula 1 sound" many owners are looking for. :)

Here's how my car sounds like at speed...

That Lamborghini whatever model it is sound would be preferable to most here.

Hey Barry - First, your car sounds SICK!! Awesome! And looks good too :) Second - Your post personifies my point that kinda got lost - SOUND!! Your car sounds awesome and I assume sounds the way YOU want it to sound - correct? So if there was an exhaust option that weighed 5 pounds less but did not SOUND the way you want it to sound would you sacrifice the sound for the weight? I doubt it but I could be wrong.

The "high-pitch F1 sound" versus lower-end "throaty" sound is an ongoing discussion and generally speaking from my experience Tubi provides the F1 sound and Capristo provides the throatier sound (at least until the valves open up). I am sure Larini, Fabspeed, Akropovic and others also fall into one of the categories or perhaps a great balance between the two - not sure. My point was to install what YOU think SOUNDS best and is high-quality and fits properly regardless of weight because if weight is the driving factor then there are a LOT of other things on a non-Challenge spec/roadgoing 355 that can be sacrificed. And lastly, although it apparently ruffled a few sensitive feathers I sincerely doing many of the 355 owners (including myself) are good enough - wait scratch that - in-tune and sensitive enough drivers to really feel the difference under normal driving circumstances. It all got lost in the mix so who really cares - I certainly don't :)

So I will ask you since you graciously posted a great video of you ON A TRACK doing what 120/130 (?) down the front straight at Pocono and obviously are licensed to do that and have the opportunity to push your 355 way past normal limits - can you feel the difference in weight between a 30-lb muffler and a 40-lb muffler?

Again - Thanks for the post and the great video - Anxious to hear your thoughts. As mentioned and promised I started another thread for the broader spectrum of modifications beyond just exhaust - Take a look and perhaps help kick that one off. I think we have run the water out of the washcloth on this thread :) :)

    Cheers!

    Hi Scott,

Thank-you for your compliments of my car. I've owned it for ten years and I always look forward to my next track event where I can drive it again. It's a safe and predictable car on the track. Ferrari knew what they were doing when they made the F355.

Those are great questions which I'll answer individually.

The Challenge silencer is very light. I never weighed it but I can pick it up and carry it around with one hand. It was designed for use on tracks on the Challenge Series circuit that had no sound restrictions...

The car also came with a Challenge muffler for tracks like Lime Rock Park which did have sound restriction rules...

That muffler is pretty quiet, perhaps a drop louder than a stock muffler. It's a bit heavier than the Challenge silencer.

Weight is no longer a factor with these older cars. Newer cars at track events have double or more the horsepower of my F355 Challenge. We all take corners at the same speed and then they disappear in the distance when we exit the turn and get out onto the straight.

Sound is important to many owners. I've only driven an F355 Berlinetta once for about twenty minutes. It had a stock muffler and it sounded pretty good to me.

I was accelerating down the Pocono front straight after exiting the road course segment. Going into Turn 1 at the end of the video I was doing ~140. No racing license is necessary for these HPDE events. We're not racing. I was able to get my car up to ~165 at Daytona on the front straight but had to immediately prepare to slow down to enter the infield road course. The F355 is very stable at high speeds. Daytona has very high banking which robs the F355 of speed until the banking levels off a bit when the car can accelerate again. It's all a matter of physics and vectors of force. On the banking, forces directed perpendicular to the track surface rob the forward vector of force provided by the engine. The third vector is that of drag. The Factory used a wind tunnel to test aerodynamics. They designed the F355 very well to the extent that the road-going version does very well on the track...

Asking questions won't be petering me, Scott. I'm happy to share what I've learned about the F355 over the past ten years.

I have a 97 355 GTS. Considering the Capristo. I have read a lot of contradictory info online even from Capristo themselves when talking about sound stage 1, 2 or 3. I'm considering the stage two which as far as I can tell is replacing the muffler. Did you do anything with cats or leave stock. Thanks.

Having run both along with the stock exhaust, imo Capristo for sound, Challenge for weight savings. I'm currently running the challenge exhaust but it's rowdy, for sure. It weighs 8lbs iirc, so much lighter than any of the other options - and is light enough that the crossmember to hold it isn't really needed saving maybe another pound for those spring mounts that the other mufflers need. There is a titanium version out there if you want to drop another couple of pounds...

Like a race car, full stop. It echos off of trees and walls, cracks and pops on over run. It's wicked. But it's obnoxious and hard to drive quietly, both because you have to baby it to do so and because it makes you want to open it up and hear it wail. I figured what the hell, I'm already driving a yellow Ferrari, so not exactly subtle, might as well lean into it. Luckily I live out in the country.
