Orange is polishing. Blue and Black are softer usually and are for waxes. Hopefully someone can chime in on the yellow. I think it's a polish or cut pad.

Yellow is typically light polishing where as orange is compounding or heavy polishing. Blue and black are finishing pads. Assuming you have Lake Country pads?

Yes, the colors are absolutely different between various manufacturers. My favorite pads (Uber, from Detailer's Domain) use a completely different color code from the short-lived Lake Country junk. And I have some pads from another maker with a different color scheme, although I can't think of the name right now. At least the Uber pads come marked, but the other pads I have are not, so sometimes tough to tell their intended use. Comparing foam density can provide useful clues though.

Yes, pad color/cut/use can and will differ from company to company.

Post up some pics of your pads and maybe we can help you out!

White foam pads are the finest. I use them all the time.
