hey everyone, i am considering a Ferrari purchase from a Greg Jones in Stuart Florida, and i was wondering if anyone has any info, good or bad. Mr Jones ( senior) is said to be a well know Ferrari / exotic car mechanic. any help would be great as i am ready to wire funds Monday. car is a bit of a project car, and there are no reciepts or records for and engine and trans that were said to be rebuilt in 2003. any help would be great.

    thanks in advance, Michael M.

If you don't, you never know what you may get. Ask them to take to a local mechanic, have a leak down test etc. etc. ....

Greg's credentials, reputation and Ferrari experience is pretty strong. He's been around a long time. Knows the early cars inside and out. No fly-by-night operator. Mike, I've known Greg for a long time and have no reason not to trust him.

thanks, thats what i was looking for. the car is a project car and i dont expect a 30 year old ferrari to not have some issues. however, i dont know these folks personally and i feel a bit leery sending money monday sight unseen based on "promises". his son has been very polite, honest and upfront. if figured if there was a " reputation " problem, someone here would know. the lack of reciepts just bugs me is all. will post details later. :)

What exactly do you mean by "project car"?

You should still get a PPI.

car is full of rust but has rebuilt engine, trans, steering and suspension. it also needs interior work. are there any shops in or around Stuart Florida that i can schedule a PPI at? bieng as this guy is a ferrari mechanic, i am wondering how hard it will be to get him to take one of his personal cars somewhere else. i am supposed to speak with the father (who did all the work) today on the phone. my inner radar will tell me if he is legit or not. the car is a red " older " Ferrari ..... :)

Is this the red 308GT4 with Boxer trim? I looked at it about 5 weeks ago. It was on Ebay. I don't think it brought more than $9500, which was below their reserve. I would agree with the reputation of the seller, quite good. Mechanically it is probably very sound. Every member of the family drives a Ferrari of some sort.

The problem with the car is the rust, especially at the windshield cowling. Hard and very expensive to repair. Rust on the fenders and the rockers is a bit more bearable. I called Tate at Carobu, he has one of these he restored, and he told me to stay away from rust at the cowl. If it's bad, it would either have to be hand fabricated, or you would have to find a donation car.

You should personally look at the car, and have a good body shop in the area that knows Ferraris give you their opinion of the body.

Figure a decent GT4 without the rust issues would run you around $16,000, so do your calculations from there. I decided the body work, and total repaint, would put me way over that value considering the asking price.

thanks for the heads up, but i have yet to see a 308 that runs for less than $12k to $15k much less one with all new stuff mechanically. i do understand where you are coming from. the car is cheap and ill post what i paid when the deal is done tomorrow morning. EBAY sucks and i dont use it nor do they set market prices. though i may have use ebay sooner or later to sell my huge pile of Z28 & TRANS AM parts, but thats another story.

they sent me 54 pics of the rust up close, so i know how bad it is. i mean no offense but i will drive the car till the body rots off and then chop it up for parts, if it comes to that :) . i dont expect any 30+ year old car to be perfect. i had a beater 308GTS that was a blast, and i have been wanting one of these too! i know some folks that know some folks. thier opinion is it can be fixed resonably. at least to last as long as the drive train will, then the car will become a planter anyway. :)
