After this afternoon, I can add something new to my list of experiences. I've been in a few wrecks before, but today, a friend & I were t-boned. Unfortunately for me, it was my side; passenger. To make a long story short, the guy in a white Mercury SUV ran a stop sign and plowed into my friend's week old Prelude, prob. around 15-20Mph; I'm not sure.

Most of my previous accidents were getting rear ended when I was with someone standing still (I've never been at fault for any accident I've been involved in). Today though, this just felt so much different. Neither of us were injured badly, but both the police & eye witnesses repeatedly said I was stupidly lucky. I was hit pretty hard, and to suffer nothing but a sore joint in my arm was a miracle.
But, I guess what makes it so shocking to me is that unlike being rear ended, I saw it coming. I just saw a white object out of the corner of my eye, and the last thing I saw before impact was this SUV just inches before impact. He hit us hard enough to spin us into a 180 in the grass, and I can still remember the "BANG!"

I'm sure many of you have had your share of accidents like this (unfortunately), but I felt like adding my story among others. I still can't get over being the one was called incredibly lucky.

I've also gone ahead and included a picture below from my bud's phone. Again, scary stuff. :(

Glad both of you were lucky.

I was on the other end of a T-bone. Lady in 70's full-sized lincoln continental making left turn pulled out of a parking lot blocking both lanes. No outs, so slammed on my brakes from ~50mph, hit her probably around ~25mph. Shoulder sore for at least a week from the seatbelt. Lucky me CA passed mandatory seat belt use law previous year, and I hated wearing seat belts. Made a believer out of me, otherwise I would have been F'ed up good!!

Time seemed to slow down, I can still relive that moment in slow motion, and hear the Bang. Weird thing is it happened ~10 miles from home, and she lived across the street, 3 houses down from me. And she always said it was my fault for 'speeding'. Ummmm, that was the speed limit.......and YOU pulled in front of me.

edit: Wow, only owned car for a week. That s*cks. But be thankful it was a well designed car.

So you basically plowed into a land yacht? Yikes.

My friend is pretty pissed, worse yet that it happened a block away from the dealer he bought it at, and when we took back, they didn't even really care. The only thing we're waiting for is to find out if the bottom of the frame is bent. According to the police officer, if it is, it'll labeled as totaled. If not, it should be fixable; and take quite a while to do.

Let his insurance company make the call if the frame is bent. If so, buy it back and part it out; there's TONS of ricers who would want parts from the 'lude, especially the H22 drivetrain.

I assume you are a younger driver. You HAVE TO get into the habit of looking BOTH WAYS before entering an intersection AT ANY TIME. Everytime I am the first or second at the green light to go through an intersection, I always drive through with a lot of caution. Too many people push the yellow or simply run the reds. Your accident could probably have been avoided if you looked a little harder. If not, tell me why.

The next time you have 10-15 minutes to pull over and watch a busy intersection in your area, do it! You'll watch people hit it on yellows, blow the reds, make right turns from far left lanes, talk on their phones, text, etc., etc., etc. to the point that you may (hopefully) change the way you approach intersections. Same with being rear-ended. Many can be avoided if you: 1) Leave space in front of your car for an 'out' if you 2) Always have your eyes in your rear-view when you stop and there are no cars (yet) in back of you. If you have an 'out' and the guy in back of you is going to fast to stop, often you can get out of their way and let them clobber the car in front of you!

    I wasn't driving.

As I explained, the car was t-boned on my side, and as you can see, the SUV hit the passenger. Thus...;)

But, I understand what you're saying, and that's already something I personally do. I don't trust anyone in another car when the intersections are about to change.

+1 I can't tell you how many times I've been spared serious harm because I exercise some extra caution like that. Drunk drivers, cell phone users, old people, etc have almost killed me countless times. Thank God for good situational awareness. LamboLover, I'd still reccomend that you see a doctor to make sure you are okay.

It is great that you are fine and its too bad about your friends car. This thread made me think of something today, twice in 20 minutes did I see someone driving 10 mph under the speed limit and doing the usual stupid braking when its not needed and things like that, both drivers were on their cell phones, most people are against the no cell phones driving rule but I have decided I am all for it if it gets people to actually drive.

LC's are solid tanks! Just sheet metal damage to the front fender & door. Frame was undamaged. They don't make em that way anymore.

My Celica, on the other hand, was close to being totalled. Being young & naive I let them fix it. I should have pushed to have it totaled, the frame was tweaked and it didn't handle quite as well after the repair. Since it wasn't his fault, and looks like a lot of damage, tell him to push for a total, especially if repair cost is close to actual value, like mine was. Unless he really loves the car.

Viewpoint A: He was owner of car when he drove it off the lot, not the dealership. So they had no vested interest after the sale, hence the attitude.

Viewpoint B: Dealership was stupid. Easy to fake concern, and if car is indeed totalled, they could have sold him another car instead of building ill-will. Bad customer service.

+1 I was in a slower speed head-on* (I was going 35-40 and I guy making a left turn pulled straight into my Bronco II with a brand new Dodge Ram he was driving home from the dealer) a few years ago. I felt good for a couple days and on the third day, I could hardly get out of bed! It really hurt! I went in for XRays, etc. The Doctor got me on Phys Therapy for my back. Not sure it did any good, but probably no harm either. You have one year to file a claim against the driver that hit you. In most courts, you will get 3X medical expenses for your P&S (If you decide that's warranted for your accident).

*After being in the wreck I was in, I could not think of getting hit at a high rate of speed. At my wreck, my head hit and cracked the top of the windshield (It was so fast, I could not remember it) and my chest bent the steering wheel into the dash. All of this in a fraction of a second.

Same here, we were rear-ended by a car going about 5 mph, but the deal is, when you are STOPPED, a 5mph sudden jolt is a heckuva impact on the neck.
My problems showed up a week later, and I'm not dreaming. Just like the above, I was fine for a few days, then one day I could not turn my neck at all.

I have an appointment for tomorrow morning, actually. This morning, my arm was a bit sore, and later tonight, it's gotten worse right behind the shoulder.
I think he's half & half. The dealer wanted $7,000 for it. Because he financed it, it'll cost around $10K with the interest, or something along those lines. Police est. around $5K in repairs, probably more, so I guess it's his choice. It really is sad, though. No accident in the 10 years it'd been around, 1 owner, and when the 2nd owner comes along, bang. :(

All I can say is, learn to drive defensively. Always think the other guys will do the opposite of what you expect them to do.

Everyday I notice that drivers stopped at a red light only look at the light to turn green, and then they proceed. Most don't even look left and right before moving to see if someone is blowing their red light. Next time you're on the road, watch the other drivers, and you're probably included in the non-defensive driver group; you'll see what I mean.

The mentality seems to be, 'I have green (or no stop sign), the hell with what anyone else is going to do!' That's really stupid my friends.

First and foremost, glad everyone is okay. Rick, are you in Houston, or somewhere else in Texas? Reason I ask is if the street lights were functioning properly?

If they were giving bad vibes, I'd take it to another dealer.
You really have to, that's probably the one thing my dad drilled into my head when I first started driving.

You have to be even more careful in the Houston area because of Ike. There are still tons of intersections with either blinking lights or simply not working yet. I've seen several people just keep on going while they're talking on their damn cellphones!!!

The exit for my house is notorious for red light runners. It's an off ramp that goes directly into a street light. So every morning I see people fly through after my light has turned green and barely miss other cars. The first day I moved in I witnessed an accident. And I know they happen there more often than I know. It's a very bad intersection.

Small update, but the doctor gave me a check up and results aren't pretty.

He put pressure along my back and legs, and discovered I had a lot of knots and sores in the right back side. My neck is also the same. Then, the doctor discovered one of my legs is now an inch longer than the other, and the pelvis is now adjusting to it. He also found pain in my hips, and believes I have sprained my lower back (never heard sprain for anything but the arms & ankles). I have to go back tomorrow to see the X-Rays, but he can't believe I didn't feel any pain in those sections of the body til' he touched them, and boy...did they hurt. It could have been worse, but he's extremely glad I came in today when I did, andthat because of my age, my body should adjust well to any treatment. He ended by mentioning had I waited, I could have been in serious pain later on. I've been put on work leave, and may have to go on light duty (one of my jobs consists of me moving boxes & bags weighing between 10-60lbs., not good for the back or shoulders).

Only thing now is to wait for the X-Rays. :(
