No, I didn't do anything with the 355 today, except put the rear license plate on. Tomorrow's nice weather, so I will investigate the plug behind the passenger seat Dr. Bob mentioned.

Julia, I asked earlier but didn't see an answer.

    1) Does the car have cats on it or test pipes?

Also, I'm happy to report my electric mirrors work! The switch had come loose from the trim piece and wasn't working because the whole switch moved down when pushed on.

I have a Dec. 28 appointment at Black Horse Motorwerks to get the fuel issue solved.

That may have been the OBD2 connector unplugged. Plug it in and see if you can read OBD2

Do you have an F1 gearbox?

According to the parts catalogue, that ECU is for F1 non-catalyzed cars.

The F1 cars have two similar plugs coming from the ECU. One goes to the OBD2 port on US cars. One goes to the F1 TCU. Both should be connected on the F1 USA car.

Can you remove the cloth tape to see if the wires are cut or spliced together?

(EDIT: What year is your car and what assembly number does it have?)

I believe Mitch is correct. According to Ian's diagrams the wires should be grey/red, brown, grey/white for the OBD II connector.

No, it's a gated car. So you're saying the ECU may have been swapped?

Well, it's probably not original, but an F1 ECU will work on a gated car. You will just have an extra plug going nowhere. It's the catalyst side of things I'm not sure of.

Actually, after looking at the wiring diagrams, I see the F1 plug has 4 pins, so the one you have in your hand is definitely for the OBD port.

According to Maranello that is the ECU for 1998 US cars with Bosch ABS and NOT F1.

Dang... my apologies.... My Google search led me to an F1 non-catalysed car on the Eurospares website. However, if I type the number directly into the Eurospares part number slot, it comes up with a non-F1 car.

Success! Once I plugged in the unplugged connector I found, the scanner was able to connect. It did not have a setting for Ferrari, but it had a "not listed" setting that I used.

    6 codes stored:
    P1448, stored
    P1448, pending
    P0134, pending (02 Circuit No Activity Detected - Bank 1 Sensor 1),
    P0154, pending (02 Circuit No Activity Detected - Bank 2, Sensor 1),
    P1451, pending
    P1230, pending

Looking at the codes, it sounds like you have an exhaust bypass issue, some O2 sensor problems (both sides), a secondary air pump issue and a (single) fuel injector issue.

Would any of those codes possibly have been caused by that connector having been unplugged?

    Unfortunately, no.

Anyway, these are common problems on the 355 and we know how to diagnose and repair them.

"Pending" means you don't necessarily have a problem, just that the ECU detected a fault and is waiting to see if it reappears within a certain number of drive cycles. It could be that these aren't real problems. It could be that the car has some real problems but the trouble codes were deleted by the PO and now they're reappearing. Hopefully the former.

Pending also are not the cause of the CEL being on. That would be the 1448 stored. Pending codes turn into stored codes is the same fault is detected tow or three times over a specific number of drive cycles. If not detected again the pending code is(or should be) erased.

No one has the code chart for the Ferrari 355 (5.2), but generally, the Ferrari 360 chart will point you in the right direction:

Does your car exhaust get a lot louder above 2760~4000 rpm? (did you say you had cats and not a straight-piped exhaust?)

    Yes, I do have cats.

Bear in mind, I don't have experience with F355s. This is the first one I've driven. It seemed loud to me just at idle, but that's probably normal. Most engines get louder the higher the revs, but other than that, I didn't notice anything that I felt was out of the ordinary. I was running mostly around 3500 rpm in 6th on the highway, and earplugs made it a lot more bearable.
