Tarek, saw and heard my first Scud at Ferrari of Central N.J. this morning. What a magnificent beast! BTW yours looks much better than this yellow one did (not that I'd kick it out of my garage).

Expand the minds of us foreigners (seriously): what do mashallah and shoukran mean?

Speak up. This isn't P&R, you know.

    TIA,

    David

Thank you. I pasted these into a vocabulary file.

In the context, i sort guessed that mashallah would be something like "thanks be to God."

Maasha-Allah literally means: as per Allah's (God) desire.
We say it to prevent envy while expressing our admiration of someone or something.
    Regards.

And this, if I may say, is a great purpose for saying it--to help prevent envy but also, if I understand your meaning, acknowledging that it is within the scope of Allah's will (or desire, to use your word choice). Actually, even the word "will" is a little tricky. I'd prefer "purpose." (I am a technical writer by profession and get caught up in the shades of meaning of words.)

The use of these expressions is something I admire about Islam--words such as Insha'Allah or Maasha-Allah--always appreciating or at least acknowledging Allah in things that might happen and things that have happened. As long as one stays close to the meaning and intention, using these words is a great habit, IMO.

    David
