So I was driving today, and an odd looking Ferrari passed me. Maybe a Boxer? I was in Highland Park, a wealthy suburb of Dallas so kit car wasn't my first guess. I turned around and caught up to it and asked the driver what it was. He said it was a Fiero Mera. Made in 1988, and sold through Pontiac dealers. They made apx. 250 of them. Not a kit car, no kits were sold, but a production car that looks like a 308. Ok, it looks like a kit car.

Anyway, I'm sure you guys know all about the Mera, but it was my first kit car Expose'. I was kinda proud of myself that I knew something didn't look quite right when it drove past me.

I saw that car in Kaufman a few months ago. I was excited until I got closer. Even though I can't afford a Ferrari right now, I just wouldn't get a fake one.

There was one for sale here in the springs about 3years ago. Sharp looking car ill tell you that but very expensive about the price of an MR2 Spyder.

The Fchatter "Mera" sells Fiero customization parts and has (or had) one. He now has a 348. His name is Rodney and his home page is here:

I'm sure if you have questions about them he could answer anything you might need to know.

Yup, the Mera was the first, all the other bad kits were originally pulled from molds of those cars.

The Mera actually has a cult following -- but then, so does the Pacer

I think it is neat that someone who started owning a replica and then selling replica parts now owns a genuine Ferrari. He even threw a big Fchat party at his house recently.

Did you see that WalMart has a line of die cast cars called "classic cherries" or something like that, replete with Pacers, K cars, et al the late 70's/early 80s junk?

with my name...I have to get a word in here. The Mera is a pretty cool little car. They confused a lot of people as to thinking it was a Ferrari. GM really wanted the Fiero to be a little Ferrari...but it obviously never came to be.

    In the day...1988 a 328 GTS was $85K+ (?) and a Mera was $25k (?) You saved yourself $60K.

Today a nice 328 is $45K and a Mera is $15...$30K difference, Yet it's half the $ you would have saved in 88'...but do you have half the (quality) car?

Point is that back in 88'-90' it may have made sense to buy a Mera. Today for the $30K diference (in todays $) you could buy yourself a nice real 308 an avoid the awkward questions every time you step out of the car....is it a reall Ferrari??? Hence having to explain yourself.

Overall there "MAY BE" a time and place where kits/replicas makes sense...365 GTB4S, 250 LM's, properly done 250 TR's, Jag XJ-13...etc. Yet as a general rule there is no amount of $ that I would spend or save that justifies getting out of a car and having "Joe public" come up and ask if it's "genuine" and then having to answer "no".....

I'm proud of my 2V 308. I love it because it's a challenge to work on, own and maintain. It may be near the lower end of the "F-car" food chain, but it's a car that continuted the Ferrari name and saved the company from chapter 11. It's worth $30K on it's best day and for the lousy $10K I'd save by having a kit, it's worth the price to be able to walk tall knowing that you have the genuine article.

I personally don't know how people can drive around in Mera's, Kelmarks and the like and not wear a ski mask to hide theri shame.

If there are some out there who are torn between the genuine article and kit for a lousy $10k...wait a year, do what it takes to buy the real deal and go from there. I'm certain that you'll regret the time, $ and effort put into a replica which will be worth 1/2 the $ you've got into it in less than a year and the enjoyment of owning the real thing that will pay dividends for years to come.

    good luck

Even though I have always owned real Ferraris, I bought an 88 Mera as a driver and loved it!

Rodney and I did a lot of mods to our cars that really improved them.

True story; the parts manager at a local Ferrari dealer had an interest in buying mine, so I drove it to the dealer. The mechanics thought it was a real 308 and asked if Ferrari had made a custom interior for it!!

I sold the Mera a few years ago and wish I hadn't. I tried to buy it back from the current owner, but they wouldn't sell. :(

Most supercar owners are now faced with the question is it a kitcar or orginal?.

308's are fun cars for the dollar but i couldn't imagine laying down the bucks for one of those. Mera really couldn't be called a replica or a kitcar since it had a limted production run so technically it is orginal. If I found one for sale hell id get my hands on it ASAP and keep it.

Trust me it's a replica, saw one up close, hood up windows down this month. I've owned 5 Fieros "back in the day" (best winter car ever made). That is a Fiero 100% rebodied...replicated if you will. It's not an original since it's a Fiero, just dressed up a bit from the factory.
