Good morning. Does anyone know if FF gearbox problems are frequent. In a dealership they have told me that it is common to have to change it at 50k Km. Does anyone knows something about it? Thanks in advance.
Never heard anything like that. The FF has the same gearbox as the Cali, Cali T, Porto, 458, 488, F8, F12 and 812. You don’t hear of anyone claiming that those models need a new gearbox at 50k km do you? Which dealership was this?
yeah, that doesnt sound right. There were some cases of faulty speed sensors but as Anopax said, that's not an FF issue. Unless the dealership is talking about the PTU.
My cynical guess is you came in looking for a FF and the dealership doesn't have a FF to sell, so they want to steer into something they do have on the floor.
It was not when I owned the car, but the last owner. So I'm not sure, but I saw that the insurance covered the cost, so I guess it just broke.
its the 3rd gear sensor issue (DCT) - its not just an FF thing as the guys have said but it is fairly common across ff, lusso, California, 458 etc
Folks: I need some help here. I'm a new owner of a 2012 FF. My first Ferrari. I bought it with 11,103 miles less than a month ago. At 11,258 miles, the Engine Control System Failure light came on. Took it to the closest dealer. Here is the relevant part of the message I just received from them: "At this point all signs are pointing to a gearbox failure and is also recommended for replacement by Ferrari’s technical support team. The cost to replace the gearbox unit will amount to $46,795 plus tax and must be specially ordered from Ferrari. The alternative option would be to disassemble the gearbox and replace the internal sensors but there is no assurance that this will remedy the failure 100%. The cost to perform this task will amount to $11,995 plus tax." Thoughts? Advice? Donations?
Were you experiencing any thing funny with your gearbox before or after the light came on? Did you leave it in the garage sitting for some time? Sometimes the battery issue throws up all these issues.
Thank you for the response! No performance issues at all -- before or after. Nothing funny. And no big periods of sitting. I had heard that about the batteries -- and that would be a blessing at this point -- but I will look into that.
Great car but Ferrari should be ashamed of themselves this has been an issue since day one, They expect an owner to pay for gearbox replacement $46.000 or PTU replacement $43.000, While pushing there $6.000 yearly warranty to protect us from there design failures. Modern cars should not have catastrophic issues straight of the showroom floor.
My 2012 FF had the "classical" DCT sensors issue last year, get remplaced at Pozzi's (French Ferrari official dealer) for about 6k€. No issue so far.
You don't say where you are located, but if there is an independent near you I would have them look at it for a second opinion.
Good point! I am located in Connecticut. I am in touch with two performance shops -- one in New Jersey and one in Massachusetts -- to have them check it out. But I am also reaching out to the shop from which I purchased the car. I bought it with no warranty, but 160 miles and about 25 days? I'm hoping they will have a plan to do the right thing.
Just got a warning light on 2018 Lusso on Gearbox failure My car will not go into first or third gear. Just 2, 4, 5,6, and 7 gears. sound familiar to anyone?? Ken Goldman
I am in Orange. Considering going to the Farmington get together tomorrow, but the weather looks a bit iffy. Love to meet up sometime, though. Ken, I'm so sorry to hear this. Yours sounds worse than mind (so far) because I haven't experienced issues beyond the warning light and the repair estimate. I'll be curious to know how things work out for you.
I also noticed that the light came on for START/STOP failure which is the switch you turn off the car shutting off when stopped at a red light. So, both things went at the same time. Hoping that it is the battery issue. Also what is the DCT Speed sensor failure--have not heard this one before Thanks for the comments!! Ken Goldman
It’s one of the most common failure modes for the DCT gearbox, regardless of which car it’s installed in. It affects all DCT Ferraris starting with the Cali in 2008 to the present day. The original fix was a $45k gearbox replacement but thankfully, the sensor and its wiring loom can now be replaced for $7-10k, depending on where you are, by a Ferrari dealer using a Ferrari supplied repair kit. The $45k replacement cost led to a lot of gearbox horror stories for early DCT cars. The failure rate is high (one well respected service director on FChat has suggested that it’s as high as 20% per annum) and covered under warranty but not so high that you should take out the warranty as you only need to be failure free for two years to be ahead. I’ve run DCT equipped Ferraris for the equivalent of 8 car years and just suffered my first failure - luckily it was discovered pre-delivery of the F12 we’ve just bought (2013 car with 25k miles) so the previous owner had to pick up the tab. Good luck and please let us know what the outcome is. Reading your post again, I’ve noticed that the only gears you can’t get are 1 and 3 which potentially points to a PTU failure. If the failure was in the DCT box, then you would probably have lost gears 5 and 7 as well. Is your Lusso a V12 or Lusso T?
