I say bring it on. I used to be all about the reds, but I prefer non-reds more these days. TdF and Grigio Silverstone FTW!

    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/06/29/fewer-ferrari-buyers-are-seeing-red-these-days/

Back in the early 1990s, an impressive 85 percent of all Ferrari models were dressed in red paint. While we can understand that Ferrari and red go together like peanut butter and jelly (or red white and... green), it's tough to understand how 85 percent of all customers could buy such a rare horse, yet insist upon such a common color. Apparently, more recent Ferrari owners agree, since the number of Prancing Horses in rosso have dropped to "only" 45 percent for 2010.

Greater differentiation is one reason for the decrease in the color red, but it also helps that Ferrari has become far better at utilizing the rest of the color spectrum. The automaker tells us in the post-jump press release that two-tone liveries have become one of the latest crazes, with the roof painted a different color than the rest of the body. Ferrari has also says it has perfected a three-layer painting technique that utilizes three coats of paint for a deeper and more brilliant color than has been offered in the past.

Perhaps the coolest thing Ferrari is doing with color is customizing its finish to just about any paint the customer desires. For example, if you like the color of the yellow fire hydrant at the end of your street, simply send a sample to the folks in Maranello, and they'll match it. Not that we'd recommend it...

Ferrari's efforts to add a bit more color to the most famous lineup of exotic supercars is obviously paying dividends. The automaker claims that special-order finishes have gone up from only one percent 10 years ago to 10 percent today. So go ahead, don't be yellow. Order your Ferrari in Blu Scozia, Avio Met or Vinaccia.

I like it too. Some of the new colors are just stunning! TdF blue. The tri-colors are really nice. Even the tri-color yellow which I'm not usually a fan of yellow on a car.

Porsche has been doing the paint to sample thing since the 1960s.

Other reasons for the decline of red:

    1. The 'Magnum' effect has run its course.
    2. The new Ferraris are large cars and don't look as good in red.
    3. Older owners (average age is now 47 for Ferrari owners) are probably more conservative.

There is nothing like driving a red sports car.

And this is especially true for a Ferrari.

I believe some of the colors look beautiful on a Ferrari. But when I am at the wheel of MY Fcar, I want to see Rosso Corsa.

Those other colors look great on other people's Fcar.

Seems Ferrari has more varieties of blue than any other color.

Maybe their trying to tell us something.

Shades of silver seem to be hot as well, though I am not that big a fan of silver. It seems newer owners want their cars to be a little more toned down and not attract as much attention as red and yellow cars.

Our new Pcar is Platinum Silver. Great for not showing dirt. This is DD territory.

The Fcar gets washed just about every time I take her out...maybe 2x a week in summer.

    I am lazy.

BTW I did wash BOTH cars today.

Ferrari had an interesting article last year in their magazine going over colors and preference over the years -- including 2010

In fact, the amount of red selection has been pretty consistent since the late 70's.

Part of this is because most first time owners select RED. And, the 80's and 90's was a growth period where a lot of new owners came into being. Also, most of their sales has been in 2 seat sports cars (which wasn't the case as much in the 60's and early 70's). Two seat sports cars seem to work better with red than a more conservative GT.

Color preferences do change over time. You don't see pastel colors like you would in the 50's. Anyone want to see that awful Fiero gold anymore? I don't think so.

If there's a shift to non-red, it's because there are more 2nd and 3rd owners coming in to order cars than there were in the past. But, the general trend of new owners wanting red has not.

Red, Black, Yellow, and Silver were the 4 most selected colors.

If there was one thing interesting it was the addition to white. White was pretty much never considered for a Ferrari and has come into being in the past 2 years. So, this is something new.

A non-red F-car barely gets noticed. If you're ever behind the two watch the difference in people's reaction.

    I am tempted to agree......
    but I don't.

Maybe together, the red stands out, but:

My "daily driver" is a Grigio Ingrid (silver) 456,
which to F-chat folks, is about as "bland" as
a Ferrari can get. The car is noticed - and
remarked favorably on - almost every time
    it goes out.

My 575 F-1 is TDF Blue (ex SierraFoxtrot
on F-chat), and is pretty subtle for most
people, but the FERRARI logo gets noticed
    very quickly.

Members with longer memories than mine may remember
a Ferrari road test from years ago in a big national
magazine: The magazine was not able to "score" the
desired model for a road test, and so borrowed the
correct car from a recent purchaser. I remember the car
shown in TDF Blue (still my favorite) with tan.

When the magazine writer remarked about the Blue,
    he said something like:

"The owner - who would like to remain anonymous -
was mature enough to not require red."

White colored Ferraris seem to be the latest fad.

I see quite a few of these nowadays compared to years ago.

The rarest color appears to be green.
We have a shiny dark metallic green 355 in our region that is just stunning when it is parked among several red cars.

I'll agree.. my red 360 drew more attention than it's balck counterpart at a recent get together. Black and silver are so much more subtle.. kinda makes me wish I got the silver I originally wanted.. kinda... ;-)

I remember a few years ago. Somebody in a Fcar was speeding. the cops came to our our secluded Ferrari corral parking. They said they had a complaint about a red Ferrari speeding on the highway. When they turned the corner around the buildings to our corral there were a couple of dozen Fcars, the majority were red. The cops left w/o doing anything.

The moral to this story is: it pays to drive a red Ferrari.

I always felt your first F car should be Ferrari red.....and mine was. Then as I got older the next two were in black. Then.....Scuderia Red and finally back to Ferrari Red again. I guess my point is that while it was fun to experiment with something different. In the end......I'm back where I began and now when I look at any Ferrari...... RC just feels right.

I would pretty much disagree with all three of these.

An overwhelming amount of owners want red over other colors.

I doubt very seriously a 1980's TV show has any influence in buying decisions anymore, or that size makes any difference visually (I see 1000 red Mustangs every day and they are huge compared to a 458) or that "older people" (like... Ferrari's used to be bought by YOUNGER people in the past?) are somehow less likely to like red because they are "old" or more conservative. Just in buying a Ferrari shows you are the exact opposite of being conservative.

The only reason for differences in color choices has to do with color trends and fashion of the time. Overrationalizing it is like trying to rationalize why people today buy a lot more Lady Gaga downloads than Elvis.

People simply like new things. They like new movies, they like new food, they like new clothes, they like new music, they like new gadgets. Simply stated... we get bored easily.

But, just because they like things "new" doesn't necessarily mean that they hate things "old" or classic. It's the same with color.

Red is a classic color for Ferrari and always will be.

Interestingly, last year at the factory there were a lot of white cars coming down the line and the guide mentioned that once if you saw a white car on the line you knew it would be for a Japanese customer, but now it's become fashionable all over...
