Girard Perregaux "pour Ferrari" ref:9015 split second chronograph (chronographe à rattrapante in French). What is a split second chronograph ? Take a look at the pics and you will see two seconds hands. First push the start button located at two o'clock. It releases both hands. One hand is superimposed over the other. You can stop one hand with the eight o'clock button to check the elapsed time while the other one continues to register the time. Push again the eight o'clock button and the second hand will catch up the first one. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Before reviewing Girard Perregaux "Pour Ferrari" limited edition watches let's have a look to two vintage Vetta chronographs. 1956 Mille Miglia Vetta chronograph, presented to Eugenio Castellotti who drove 290mm s/n 0616 to victory. Philippe: There are few things more enjoyable than to learn from someone who is extremely well-versed in a field. Thank you for taking the time to post this.
Some of the younger readers here (or those casually interested in watches) may or may not have noted the elongated hashmarks on some of the vintage chronographs on their minute recording subdials. The longer marks at 3, 6, and 9 were used in the days of pay phones, when long distance charges were meted in 3 minute intervals. So you dial the desired number, put in the coins, then begin the start function on the chronograph. When you approach the 3 minute mark you know to end your conversation, or get ready to feed some more coins into the phone.
The second Vetta watch in post 10 also has a telemeter chapter ring along with the more common tachymeter chapter ring. First used for military purposes, it's more commonly used to measure how far you are away from a lightning strike. To use it, you begin the chronograph when you see a lighting bolt. You stop the chronograph when you hear the 'boom'. The chronograph hand will indicate in distance how far you are from the location of the strike. It works on the fact that you see the light instantly, but the noise from the strike travels at the speed of sound. Here is a brief explanation HowStuffWorks "Can you calculate how far away lightning struck by how long it takes for the thunder to arrive?"
Fantastic thread, thanx from down-under. Though it doesn't rate as highly as the watches exhibited here,I would like to share a touching moment. Last year I entered an event in Tasmania for carburettor cars,to get there 2 friends and myself drove both my cars down,a distance of about 1500KLM's. I was lending my 365(my cars live 1600KLM away from me so I exercise them where possible) to a well known, but at that point carburettorless,Ferrari owning gentleman. At a party thrown by one of the drivers(who was my co-driver for the event),the gentleman driving my 365 pulled me aside to present me with one of the current crop of Scuderia watches,as a thank-you for the lending of my car to him and his wife. Quite unexpected and very moving.
1954 Mille Miglia Vetta chronograph, presented to factory team driver Umberto Maglioli who drove 375plus 0384am at the leading place of the race until he retired at the Futa pass. Start time number 545 (05:45am) is engraved on the caseback. There is also a Ferrari Challenge series (100 watches) and 2 F360GT series, one of which is *VERY* limited: the "consumer" edition of 360 watches, and the "pit crew" edition of 14 watches. I'll try to post pics of my Challenge watch and F360GT ("pit crew" edition) watch soon....
This is #39/100. Stainless steel case, rubber strap with deployment buckle. Backside has G-P logo, FC logo, Ferrari shield, number. Image Unavailable, Please Login
This is the "pit crew" edition, with the gray prancing horse on the face (consumer edition has Ferrari shield in place of the gray prancing horse). Titanium case with Ti bracelet. I bought the bracelet, watch came with rubber strap and black leather strap with red stitching. The leather strap on my FC watch didn't last long, so I opted to save the good looking black one, rather than wear it out. [several posts to follow - it won't seem to let upload more than one image at a time.] Image Unavailable, Please Login
The box alone is almost worth the price of admission! High gloss red with cloisonné shield. Super nice! Image Unavailable, Please Login
The FC watch is Ref. 8020, while the F360GT watch is Ref. 8028. Not sure why the numbers are different, the movements must be identical. FWIW. gp
