Tuesday night in Paris at Rétromobile, Mario Peserico (General Manager of the brand) announced (spring 2018) the launch of a new chronograph in the Tazio Nuvolari collection: the "Tazio Nuvolari Legend".

Eberhard & Co. warmly thanks the guests who braved the weather (Paris was covered with snow !) for the launch, as well as the double World Rally Champion and brand ambassador Miki Biasion, who made the trip especially for the press conference and delighted the guests by his kindness and his availability.

I have an interesting Ferrari watch. It is a Cuervo y Sobrinos from Havana Cuba circa 1950’s. If anyone has more information about the watch I would be greatful to learn more. I was told it was not unusual for Enzo to present these watches to Ferrari owners/drivers. Thanks, David Curro

Davis, i'm sorry it's a fake ferrari watch with a repainted dial.
Do you really think swiss watches manufacturers have produced yellow dial in the 50's or 60's ?

COUNT CARLO FELICE TROSSI PATEK PHILIPPE CHRONOGRAPH

"Trossi Leggenda" is one of the most exceptional chronograph wristwatches ever made by Patek Philippe. It is almost certainly unique and is the largest known single button chronograph wristwatch ever made by the Geneva watchmaker. The wristwatch was originally owned by Count Carlo Felice Trossi, President of Scuderia Ferrari who was himself, a racing driver, pilot and speed boat racer. This wristwatch was clearly specially chosen by Count Trossi as a practical timekeeper for use in motor racing and aviation to assist with the accurate timing of events in a highly visible format. The accompanying Scuderia Ferrari brochure shows Count Trossi wearing the watch in 1937 and must be one of the earliest examples of a wristwatch being worn on the outside of a shirt cuff.

Early in date, the "Trossi Leggenda" Patek Philippe was one of the first single button chronograph wristwatches made by the company and one of the earliest with horizontal registers; before this time, registers were usually displayed vertically on dials, which was the style more commonly found on pocket watches).

    COUNT CARLO FELICE TROSSI

Count Carlo Felice Trossi was born into an aristocratic Italian family in Biella, a small city between Milan and Turin, on the 27th April 1908. Captivated by the possibilities of speed, Count Trossi was a keen motor car and speed boat racer as well as an early aviator. His technical knowledge and experience in those fields enabled him to create a Grand Prix car with an aircraft type engine, a rare feature for a racing car. With a 'hands on' approach, he provided full manufacturing facilities for the project in his own home, the magnificent Gaglianico Castle. The car was very futuristic in design and combined features from both aeroplanes and racing cars. The car is today exhibited in the Museo dell'Automobile in Turin.

As a successful entrepreneur, Count Trossi became an early financial supporter of the renowned Scuderia Ferrari company and was elected its President in 1932. Fulfilling his dreams, he successfully attained wins at the Italian and Swiss Grand Prix respectively in 1947 and 1948.

It seems that the "Trossi Leggenda" Patek Philippe may well have been specially requested a few weeks after Count Trossi's appointment to the Scuderia Ferrari Presidency. Today, the legacy of the "Trossi Leggenda" continues with this unique and stunning timepiece by Patek Philippe.

At 46mm in diameter, the "Trossi Leggenda" ranks as the largest single button chronograph wristwatch ever made by Patek Philippe. Indeed, the only vintage chronograph that can be compared in size to the present wristwatch is Patek Philippe no.867857, a unique aviator's wristwatch; however, that watch is a two button, split seconds chronograph. It should also be noted that 867857 is 20 years later in date than the "Trossi". Interestingly, however, the two watches have the same diameter of 46mm and it interesting to compare the two watches side by side (please refer to the printed catalogue for photographic comparison). The aviator split no.867857 is now exhibited in the Patek Philippe Museum.

The "Trossi" houses a massive 17''' extra quality movement that fills the width of the case. The split seconds aviator no.867857 watch, by contrast, features a smaller 13''' movement. Despite the watch's tremendous size, the "Trossi" Patek Philippe is perfectly proportioned. The lugs have a gauge of 24mm and are solidly shaped with a gentle downward curve. Many of the early chronograph wristwatches from this period feature wire lugs with solid bars, the present watch already features gold spring bars and the solidity of the lugs help maintain the overall harmony of the watch's design. By incorporating a gold cuvette under the case back, the watch also gains an extra solidity.

    SIZING THE "TROSSI LEGGENDA"

The dial of the 'Trossi' wristwatch is perfectly designed with large scales and substantial sunken subsidiary dials. It features a signature typical for the early period of dial production with the complete company name of "Patek Philippe & Cie, Genève". The large dial allows for a wide tachometer scale which would, of course, have been very useful when caluculating the speed of cars on a race track. The hands for the chronograph (i.e. the central chronograph seconds hand and the minute recording hand) are both blued steel moon hands to clearly separate them from the gold feuille minute and hour hands and the blued steel straight constant seconds hand. The flat wide applied baton numerals are typcial of the early 1930s and are clearly reminiscent of the classic calatrava dials of the same period. With harmonious symmetry, the dial of the 'Trossi' wristwatch blends perfectly with the classic form of its case.

17''' damascened fully jewelled nickel lever movement, bi-metallic compensation balance, satin finished chronograph bridges visible to the back-plate, precision regulator • 18k gold cuvette signed and numbered • silvered dial, applied flat pointed baton numerals, gold feuille hands, blued steel chronograph seconds hand, subsidiary dials for constant seconds and 30-minute register, outer tachometer scale • 18k gold massive hinged bassine case with rounded bezel, plain polished case back, down-turned lugs with gold spring bars, chronograph pusher through the crown with chronograph locking slide above, case, dial and movement signed, with original Patek Philippe 18k gold buckle.

Auctioneer Sotheby's has sold this chronograph on may 1 2008: 2,345,000 CHF (Hammer Price with Buyer's Premium)

EBERHARD & CO. CELEBRATES TAZIO NUVOLARI

The transition from champion to legend.

There are some people in the history of sport that cannot be defined merely as ‘champions’. When they exceed the limits set by their time and enter the superhuman ‘Hall of Fame’of those who have broken all barriers by crossing the line of the inconceivable, it is then that they undergo the natural progression that turns them into legends.

Tazio Nuvolari, the champion driver who dominated the decades between 1920 and the late forties, is quite obviously such a sportsman.

When, almost 30 years ago, Eberhard & Co. decided to celebrate his enterprises by creating a collection that bears his name, the figure of Tazio had become shrouded by the mists of time and all that had happened in the world of motoring since his era. It is also because of the efforts of the famous Swiss Maison and the success of the ‘Tazio Nuvolari’ collection that this mist has lifted. In the past few decades, the impetuous, at times overbearing personality of a man who made his passion for sport a reason for living, placing it above all else, even above himself and those closest to him, has been brought to light. His story has inspired a great number of initiatives, books have been written, songs have been dedicated to him, and the great old-timers event that bears his name brings hundreds of fans from all over the world to his homeland every year. All this has ensured that the fame he deserves, that of being the greatest racing driver ever, lives on today.

Eberhard & Co. has been the main sponsor of the Nuvolari Grand Prix for over twenty years. In this role and through the many models of watches he has inspired, the Maison has helped enormously in paying tribute to the ‘Mantovano Volante’, proudly aware of the fact that the champion of technical perfectionism chose an Eberhard to accompany him in everyday life.

The Tazio Nuvolari collection mainly consists of sports watches, and many versions have been added to it over the years. Some of these have been inspired by great victories or enterprises realized by the champion. The latest, Nuvolari Legend, seeks to celebrate the essence of the man and of the sportsman, consecrating him among those who will never be forgotten.

Nuvolari Legend is an automatic timepiece with a steel case, available in two sizes: 39.5mm and 43mm in the Grande Taille version. The model is water resistant down to a depth of 30m. and features a black dial with luminescent Arabic numerals, a minutes counter at 12 o’clock, a hours counter at 6 o’clock and a spiral tachometer scale in km/hr in the centre. The movement can be admired through the transparent sapphire crystal base, which is secured by eight screws, decorated with a ‘chessboard’ image designed to look like the race-startflag, and customised with the historic stylised Alfa Romeo Type 12C in which the great driver obtained many victories.

In 1998 I purchased an 18K gold Ferrari Formula ( Cartier) chronograph from Fred Repass who sold Ferrari memorabilia,. The bracelet links are solid 18K as well. It has the outer cardboard box with the red plastic Ferrari case and watch and papers inside. The watch is marked 56 of 60. Fred has passed away now, but told me the Pope was given #1. Sounds like the Pope had a lot of watches. I would appreciate any information I could get on this series.
    Thanks

To me, I don't care how expensive or exclusive a watch is if it doesn't keep good time!

Most of the time I wear a $35 Casio which receives a signal from the National Atomic Clock every night that keeps its time absolutely precise. In 3 years of ownership, I've never had to adjust it or wind it, and I use it to adjust all the other clocks in my house and my cars (including the Ferrari's).

If an expensive watch can't match that, I do not want it!

    Scuderia Ferrari One by Cabestan.

To reach deep into Ferrari’s DNA, Crealuxe worked closely with the Ferrari design team based in Maranello, Italy, led by Flavio Manzoni to create an exciting new Ferrari chassis for the high performance Cabestan motor inside. The first step was to identify the characteristic elements in Ferrari’s Formula 1 race cars: materials, shapes, surfaces, etc. and to design these elements into a new case that would capture the emotion that is synonymous with Ferrari.

The case of the Scuderia Ferrari One embodies speed, power and aerodynamic perfection. It is made of a titanium alloy used for the components of Ferrari Formula One cars. The single crystal enhances the distinctive visual lineage that is unmistakably Ferrari. The motor is perfectly visible with its large wheel, stylishly engraved aluminium rotary drums and carbon-fiber bridge. On the sides, a special magnesium alloy was used to create likeness of the wheels and lug nuts that are emblematic of motor sports. Even the leather strap, captures the emotion of the Daytona leather seats of Ferrari automobiles.

The nucleus of the motor, with its vertical gear train, is a vertical tourbillon coupled with a miniature chain and fusee, an automatic transmission, that compensates for the torque curve of the mainspring and delivers a constant force to the movement. The result is a timepiece that is amazingly accurate : ± 1 second per day.

Most of the time pieces in this thread have style: either classic styling or a more modern quality that will, in time, become classic or timeless (no pun intended).

This particular piece could be the greatest watch in the history of watches but I do not like it. Sorry. With an unlimited budget I would love to have a large collection of Ferrari chronographs but I would never wear or own anything that was not to my taste. I have spent hours looking at the Collector Studio website creating an imaginary wish list but this piece would never be on that list. Perhaps I am just too much of a dinosaur to appreciate the avant garde.

You're not alone. I prefer something functional, classic and traditional. Given that, the quote at the bottom sums up it up too.
