I had dinner with a friend last night in Rome and I decided to get a "local" view on the difference between both companies. It's not my intention to throw gas on the fire and this isn't a scientific study (even though she has a masters in engineering) but she summarized it as this:

Lamborghini is a car for people that want to let everyone else know they are rich.

Ferrari is a car for people that are passionate about cars.

I had dinner with a friend who said that anyone who drives either is a show-off with a poor self image.

Of course, getting the view of a friend is a pretty unreliable source at the best of times....

Well there is nothing wrong with either statement. I like Lambo's and plan to own one at some point. But the thing the drew me to Ferrari first was its' heritage.

Although I’ve heard and seen this comment for countless times (much less on a quality site such as Fchat), I still have to ask: what’s your or your friend’s point? Didn’t you say you asked your Italian female friend for a “local view on the difference between both COMPANIES”? If so, why would you take her response regarding actually the profiles of the two companies’ CUSTOMERS as the answer to your question? I don’t mean to disrespect either you or your friend, I just always thought someone with an engineering background would look at things more rationally than some here on Fchat. I guess I was wrong. After all, I don’t have a masters in Engineering in order to judge all matters in life.

This reminds me that I have to ask my partner’s wife to pick the flowers for my daughter's wedding instead of a wedding planner, because she has a Ph.D in Botany.

Interesting thought, too bad its the exact opposite of reality. I don't have to ask anyone else to find the truth, as I've known hundreds of Ferrari owners over the years and have concluded that the image and prestige of the brand is the ultimate motivator to acquire one. Whether they wrap their purchase around performance, heritage or design, its clear their reach is for status and acclaim of "arrival," and any other contention is a spin and stroke.

Conversely, the typical Lambo owner has owned multiple Ferraris (in my case-7) and has already arrived. They have had all the fame and stardom associated with them and are ready for something beyond, something more extreme that looks like nothing else. In my humble opinion, Lambos are a full step up on the food chain, and more importantly, in the world of Exotica. Any model from Sant' Agata makes the corresponding offering from Maranello look like just another pretty car. Measuring passion is difficult, however, nod to Lamborghini owner.

Read the article on the 599 GTB in the July issue of Automobile, the last three paragraphs. DeMatio is right on the money: Paraphrasing-- "Ferrrari should exit Pininfarina and start designing cars that don't look like all that came before. Too many models over the years are evocative of their predecessors; they need to be more special and unique, like gutsy Lamborghini has done." Case closed!

Dunno, based on my experience (however limited) with the owners of both cars, her opinion sounds pretty close to the mark .

With all due respect Judge.......your friend is clueless on this question. Her masters in whatever has no bearing on this at all. It appears that you are just trying "to throw gas on the fire" however, and that is ok by me. A good F VS L always gets the juices flowing.

...but David, how many miles does your Lambo have on it? :D;):D

That's not a fair question, I know your Ferraris had very low miles too.

Ferrari and soccer (futbol) are the two national pastimes of Italy. You drive around and you see prancing horse stickers and forza azzurri flags EVERYWHERE. They are institutions over there that symbolize national pride. Lamborghini is just another car company.

I've sold Ferraris and I've sold Lambos, and I can tell you that it seems Ferrari owners want to be part of a group and get together with other Ferrari owners. Lambo owners, on the other hand, could care less about doing group functions, and almost seem like they would rather just drive by themselves. In Italy, it seems the people there were very excited and proud of Ferrari, but even in Modena, they still thought of Lamborghini as being more exclusive and exotic.

    Just curious,
What does your friend do? Could he/she afford one of these cars? I've usually hear these comments from people who are far away, or aren't motivated, to work at obtaining one.

I personally think that you should drive what you want and can buy, to hell with what others think. I have to agree that Lambos are more exotic, and rare. When I was a kid seeing a Ferrari would get me excited for about half a day, seeing a Lambo would send me into a euphoric high for about a week, and I would tell everyone I met, whether they cared or not. Nowadays I am a little more grounded, thus my choice to buy an F-car rather than a Lambo. Price is also a factor here, but totally off topic. The Ferrari is a little more "useable" day to day, but if price was no object, it would be a Diablo 6.0!

On a side note, I see a lot more Lamborghinis in Reno than Ferraris. I know of two Diablos, a Murcielago, a Gallardo, and a couple of Countaches in the Reno area. Strange for a "small" city.....

I don't think she answered the question properly. She did it indirectly by talking about the customers. I could see why Italians would prefer Ferrari as a whole more since it goes way back in their automotive and racing history. It gave the people something to come together on and cheer when racing liveries were given colors based on nationality.

    Welcome back! Where ya been?!?
