All, OK, it has been a very long day at work, so stirring up a controversy, that I don't have to deal with, seems about right for a Tuesday . At work, I had contingent of visitors from a particle accelerator facility in northern Europe visit a month ago. Two of my guests noticed my Ferrari LOGO badge Lanyard and asked if I owned one. I answered, Yes, and showed them my laptop screen-saver, my 1981 308 GTSi (Baby) and the response from both was "Oh, Good. the V12s sound like high speed sewing machines". "The V 8's sound more like race cars". This is not my quote or opinion, just an off the cuff European reaction. ( I had to smile and nod, as I am far from impartial)
Not that I'm impartial either, but I'd give my middle nut for a V12 Ferrari. Don't get me wrong, my V8 screams, but a Ferrari V12 is sonic nirvana. I think those guys have taken one too many quarks to the head (so that would be the "top quark").
I think you've got to take displacement into account when evaluating their remark (so depends what F models they are using for comparison) -- a 1.5~2L 12 cyl will be a lot higher pitched than a 4~5L 12 cyl.
Personally, I prefer the sound of the V8, always have. Doesn't mean I don't also want a v-12! BTW, I think you have too many nuts.
Daytonas sound incredible. I think the newer V12s are more sedate -- you don't necessarily want the same aggressive tone out of a touring car like a 612 or 599 that you did out an old GTO.
They all sound good, but listening to a 355 next to a 550 I'd agree that the V8 is the better soundtrack. The Jag V12s were never much to write home about. It depends on the engine/car.
I have to go with the 12 with a custom exhaust. Our only TR owner Kenny, i can't rember his user name, when he left from a gathering we had, open it up about a 1/4 mile down the road and that sound..............ooooh that sweet sweet sound.
The hazards (or benefit?) of being a physicist. All those radiation sources I'm around. P.S. Your avatar kills me. I love it. Which Woody movie is that from. I've seen it, but the 60's have destroyed my memory. (which is really screwed up because I was born in '70)
To be honest, it kills me too. Its from Everything you ever wanted to know about Sex... For your amusement, here are a couple of random quotes of his: "I'm very proud of my gold pocket watch. My grandfather, on his deathbed, sold me this watch." "Sex without love is an empty experience, but as empty experiences go, it's one of the best." "Sex between a man and a woman can be absolutely wonderful - provided you get between the right man and the right woman." "Love is the answer - but while you're waiting for the answer, sex raises some pretty interesting questions." "If it turns out that there is a God, I don't think that he's evil. But the worst that you can say about him is that basically he's an underachiever."
Did you ever hear a Jag V-12 with an open or near open exhaust? Wonderful sound. Agreed, the archtecture is somewhat strange (cylinder heads), but you can rev the cr*p out of them all day long and find the hash-marks in the cylinders after 300.000kms no problem. Great engine.
Just a U.S.-spec XJS with an automatic, probably not the best of the breed, and certainly strangled with smog equipment.
It is hard to argue with this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXTbGI26j1E I am wondering out loud why nobody has posted any sound clips to back up their argument up until this point.
