I am having some repairs done to my car which requires a thousand dollar part and the shop called me today asking me to pay for the part before ordering it. makes me think twice about the stability of some repair shops in this economic climate. or maybe I am reading too much into it and thats how car repair business is done this day and age.

Not at all normal. I took my Ferrari to my indy and racked up a big bill that I didn't have to pay until I picked up.

I have seen that. I know Ferrari BH parts dept makes you pay for a special order parts up front. It has more to do with them not being able to return the part and then sitting on inventory they wont sell quickly. If it is a routine service part it is not normal, but a non stocked item I could see that. Now if they ask for labor up front then watch out..

It makes sense at the dealer parts counter so they don't get stuck with parts they don't immediately need . But not when the car is in for service, this is ridiculous !
I would be upset if it was me.

I think this is becoming more common. It's a bit like insurance. If the shop doesn't know you that well, and/or you're needing some big dollar, rarely replaced parts purchased, then you are probably going to be asked for some up front. Also, some jobs literally take months. I don't see that a shop should be asked to cover 20-30K in parts for months. Again - it really depends on the circumstances. Geography may play a part also. If I were a shop that saw a lot of real estate investors as clients and I was in SoCal or Florida, I'd be VERY careful :D

    Car was left there.
    Problem was found.
THEN they ask for a grand to buy the part?

That’s like a dentist filling your tooth, you’re already in the chair, he's drilling, then he stops and says,
“oh, by the way, before I can continue, I need some money for the silver I’m putting in”

Where there’s smoke there’s fire. Not a good sign.

    I do.

I, for one, would not leave my Ferrari in a service bay if I knew the shop's financial situation was precarious.

SEVEN, but depending on the time of day, it might be FIVE

Actually, the TWO doesn't follow the SEVEN. But it does fit into the alternate scheme.
