I was looking online at Ferrari products which made me think.....

What is everyones opinion regarding Ferrari selling licenses for others to put on their products?
(I searched and could not find a topic similar.)

It seems that there are a lot of products that have the logo on it.. Everything from Segways to stereo equipments to paper weights and anything in between. In a way it, it kind of reminds me of KISS.. Will there ever be the Ferrari Casket or Ferrari Condom? Of course not all items may be "official"....

I mean not to insult the brand, I love Ferrari but I was wondering where the limit is drawn.
(this applies for any auto manufacturer as well)

I don't think that Ferrari is ever going to endorse something that would potentially hurt it's image. I'm sure they make enough from the road cars and F1 to not worry too much about marketing.

It seems to me that $$ is the only real factor here.

I dont disagree with you but wouldnt the "lets throw our name on just about anything (less anything that could hurt us)" just to make a dollar " mentality hurt them?

Ferrari is a prestigious automobile. Does the fact that there are a lot of products with the logo, just to make a dollar
take away from this? Then again.. if people are willing to pay for such products.

This has been discussed to death before.

Items like ball caps, shirts, key fobs and such seem like a harmless way to promote the brand. Even the Puma racing shoes and clothing, while a little over the top for me, make sense. I don't even mind the ashtrays, clocks, etc. It's part of F1 racing heritage to have logos all over everything.

Now we're seeing Ferrari-branded notebook PCs, stereo speakers and other crap that is less an homage to the brand than a silly distraction from it. The answer is that yes, a line should be drawn. I don't know that it will 'ruin' the brand, but I work with a lot of tech companies and you would look like a real tool if you showed up with a 'Ferrari' laptop PC.

You guys do not understand the Ferrari business model. Simply, it is this:

1.) Produce a small(ish) number of expensive to mfg, low(ish) margin cars that have greater demand than supply.

2.) Use the profits from this (and not as big as you would think) to fund an F1 Team that has incredible history and image around the world. Get extra money from sponsors who want to ride the bandwagon of publicity.

3.) Use the image and mystique from 1 and 2 to get big income from large volume, super low cost to manufacture peripheral products and licensing. Ferrari makes more money from their licenses and merchandising line than from the car line. But they use the car line and F1 team to create the image required to sell all of those hats, shirts, etc.
