What is the size of the 348/355/360/430 oil filter (Purflux LS925) -- and are there any wrench alternatives to the Hill Engineering $100 one?

    ???

I found the one from Ultimate Garage for $32 made by Facom which would be an alternative.

    Is the USAG D156 discontinued?

Fantastic Joe, I knew the Brit eBay would come to the rescue as they have their head on straight regarding parts costs over there :)

Pretty sure that tool on Amazon is not the same, although it may fit. From what I've read, the tool is also for installing the new filter with some significant torque. The one I have is made for the Purflux filter which of course has a unique design (the notches for the filter anyway).

It works perfectly on the 360 purflux. Sure it's not a day-in-day-out workshop tool but for an occasional DIYer it is fine although only a 3/8" drive. No problem with torqueing up.

I'm only trying to give the OP options.........

Agreed, that Laser tool works perfectly well and the torque required is quite low. It would probably last a professional a life-time never~mind the DIY'r.

I'm sure any 86mm wrench with 18 notches would work great. Would have bought the Laser one except that I ended up getting the UK eBay one last night...thanks everybody.

Will not work on the 360 and 430. You need to buy that filter tool, period. Money well spent, trust me. Buy the $32 one and be done. It costs half as much as an oil filter. Give up Starbucks for a week and you are there.

For those stateside, check Pep Boys and Autozone as well. They have a host of steel oil filter wrenches available in different sizes, all for 3/8" drive and around $10.

I don't remember off-hand if the Pep Boys near me had an 86mm /18 flute when I was looking a month or so ago for another car I own. But, they had the size I needed that day.

I tried all the auto stores around Central FL and never found the right wrench....that would have been great! I must agree with Yelcab, the job really does require it--none of the many wrenches I have for other cars worked very well.

Make sure you use a torque wrench when installing the new filter, now that you have a filter socket that will work. 25 Nm/18.4 lb-ft.

For a 575 I got mine from Ricambi. It will stay with the car if there is a next owner for the car. GTS Bruce

Interesting, these are available on US Amazon for a little over $7 but the shipping is almost $10 more. Best to try and find one local if possible. Used on certain VWs as well so should be around. I have one of the Facom units and they are very good but a lot more expensive.

FYI, bought the Beta Tools 1493pF 86mm and it is a piece of junk with the filter not fitting comfortably in it meaning you need to force the filter in and then it is extremely difficult to get the tool off the filter => Garbage.
I have used Facom tools forever, always satisfied with them so will buy a Facom d.156 and see if that does better.
