As I sit here drinking my iced coffee staring at my 458, it becomes clearer to me each day that Ferrari’s attempts to go it alone, particularly with the 296 GTB and the “pinnacle” Daytona SP3, just reinforce how much Ferrari has lost when they ended the relationship with Pininfarina.

The je ne sais quoi of Ferrari has been all but lost in all recent releases since the end of the Pininfarina relationship. The 488 and F8 was largely just evolutions of Pininfarina 458 design, but Ferrari’s attempts at a completely new car, such as the 296 and SP3, show just how lost Ferrari is without Pininfarina. I understand the tangible need to go hybrid, etc. but that doesn’t mean style has to suffer as well. There is no reason why the savoir faire of Ferrari also needs to be lost and I believe the reason for it is the termination of the Pininfarina relationship.

    My 458…

I think I have to agree. Pininfarina usually brings a great mix of simplicity and beauty to their designs. Which not all Italian designers do.

Ferrari is simply part of a corporation. It has no value outside of profit. Like many great marques. It to in time will perish. For the corporation, Pininfarina is simply a cost they will not bear.

I don’t pay much attention to the specials, do I don’t know what the white thing is. Except awful. Shocked that it came from Pf.

The white thing was Ferrari all by itself, without Pf.

I promise to stop complaining about the Purosangue if they bring back Pininfarina.

I agree, although I am fairly impressed with the Monzas. Just not the price tag :).

I’m sure PF still secretly consults on designs. The same minds could not have come up with the 296 AND the SP3, or the 812 SF AND the Roma. Not a chance.

    I like the 296 GTB.
Pininfarina was in financial trouble when Ferrari decided that they better bring design in-house. I am sure that Ferrari can hire talented designers and mimic the Pininfarina style if needed, but honestly.
458 = beautiful but headlights never grew on me
FF/ Lusso = this was Pininfarina and I love the car for what it is, but design isnt all that great
F12 = front end doesn't do it for me. Almost bought a lightly used one pretty cheap from Ferrari dealer 3 years ago before they jumped in price.

I think the 296 looks amazing though.

Style and looks are absolutely essential in my view to differentiate models and the marque from others. I'm not a speed mad person that going 0-60 mph in 2.9 sec vs 3.1 second is meaningful. So if the drag coefficient of the "slower" car is worse because it has a more attractive design - then so be it.

All Lamborghini and McLaren cars in the last decade seem to be the same design over and over. Ferrari needs to avoid that as the 458 and 488 are looking too similar. No easy task to make cars visually unique yet cohesive with the Ferrari brand - yet that's what a design studio does.

As the latest Corvette looks like a Ferrari cousin there is a need to zig the brand away from the same old flat angular designs. Bring back some curves for a change.

In ur opinion, since the 458, which car is the best Ferrari in-house design? Just curious. In my opinion, the 812 Superfast.

So much this. I really can't tell the recent Lamborghini's apart from each other, and the McLarens are just as bad at that. Only the longtail looks different from the last few models. They look good, and have strong brand identity, but no outstanding features. 1000% true of the 911 too.
To be fair, the 458/488 are identical to people that don't know these models already, so it's a common problem.

I also agree that style is incredibly important in modern cars, since they are all ridiculously fast and there's really not much more capability you can put into it that 99% of people can use.

I agree, new cars just don’t have it. They are looking too styled, and the identity with the past is missing.

Agree with the author. Except I think classic Ferrari/PF design influence ended with the 488. The F8 was a terrible attempt to *****fy what used to be the aggressive slot in the lineup, probably to appeal to snowflake millennials

They did a great job on the 812SF/GTS, and perhaps Monza, but beyond that I can't say I'm a fan of any other in-house designs

    I hate they dropped PF.

However now in retrospect I think they needed to. They needed to have a fresh face. A break... And a new style. I still prefer the old but I think people would think that Ferrari was putting out more of the same when the competition from Lamborghini and the new commer McLaren were putting out modern exciting designs. Ferrari could have been seen as the old man car which would be devistating to the brand. I also think the car would be seen as aston Martin and that's not good.

Now... I really wish they would bring PF back. I really do.

I am not a fan of the 812 styling.

The Roma is ok. But could have been better.

I think the portofino was good though! They did alright with that and the M.

Also... It seems most of Ferrari chat thinks the 296 is beautiful. I was really surprised how many liked it.

Again... I wish for more PF style designs. The more elegant organic shapes. I am not a fan of the Japanese style that seems to be creeping into the cars.

Also, the 612 has its quirks....an absurd rear seat, pathetic button assortment, etc., horrid instrumentation, etc. etc. However, put the go pedal down and all is forgiven. I just drive it and ignore all the rest. It is pleasurable to relish the reactions of those who take another look; the cops don't.
