ishan...thanks for posting and getting me linked up with this incredible website. Great pics in the third link. The Maharajas' RR's are some of the most beautiful classics of that era. I know that by the time Ferrari came around, ca. 1950, the political scene in India had changed drastically from pre-WWII days. But, I understand that there were still quite a few very wealthy noble families and business people. Any idea if Ferrari sold cars there in the '50s, '60s, and '70s?
Very few ferraris ever made to India after 1950.Its only in the last 6-7 yrs or so ferraris have started coming in.But there were a few ferraris in india during the "political raj" period.I will give you an account One of the first ferraris to be documented in india was a 365 GTC owned by an Italian diplomat by the name of Dr Ross.At that time indian car market comsisted of only 3 models none having more than 35 hp!Less than 25,000 cars were annually sold in India during those times. He also owned a 365 GTB/4. Another famous ferrari was a 275 GTB bought by another italian in bombay a Dr Cesare Rossi. Then came a number of 308 GTSs.One one was in south india was imported in '79.There are around 3-4 308s in bombay but in sadly in bad shape. A bangalore tycoon(Vijay Mallya) owns a 246 GT dino which is in immaculate shape. He also owns a 328 GTS.Then there were 3-4 348s imported of which one is in Kolkata. There is also a Mondial neglected in a garage which was imported during that time. Ferraris really started pouring in with the 355s. Number them are owned all over india including a spider 355F1 in blue. Some 575s were also imported. There are number of 360s( one owned famously by Sachin Tendulkar after he was gifted it Michael Schumacher) and F430s are dime a dozen.599 GTBs have started arriving at our shores as well. However no challenge cars,no 612s,no supercars(enzo,f40,f50,288 GTO) and definately no californias. However there is a confirmed Scud in bombay. In Bangalore i can account for: 9 ferraris 3 F430s,1 dino,1 328 gts,1 575,1 355, and a yellow 360.Also another ferrari which is unidentified but confirmed. It is a 70s/80s model. Mumbai and delhi have many more. Ferrari is expected to start selling in India around 2010-11,along with Maserati.
avishar, Thanks for bringing me up to speed. Very comprehensive and impressive history you've done! I would have guessed that more 45 year-old-plus Ferraris were exported to India when new or near new.
Some of the old generation Ferraris from India- Ferrari 348 GTS, Ferrari 308, Ferrari 275GTB in Mumbai owned by the late Dr Cesare Rossi. The car has been shipped abroad. Ferrari Dino, Ferrari 355 and Ferrari F430 Scuderia owned by Anil Ambani. Cool !!!!!!!!! Check out Forbes list. He's one of the richest man on earth. I don't know much about his cars but his brother Mukesh Ambani is getting himself a mansion made with a parking spase of around 150 cars. He owns Maybachs, Ferraris, Lambos , Boeing Jets , etc etc. . I think it will be easy to list the cars he doesn't own .
Check this out - dying 308 GTO - I made a post in abandoned Ferraris thread. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?p=138419550#post138419550

Ambanis may have money but Vijay Mallya has taste. He owns around 250+cars worldwide but his most famous collection of cars is in a private museum in Sausalito,CA.It is called Vijay Mallya Private Car Museum. This is the list cars in that museum. Not abandoned exactly but it seems the owner is no more interested in taking care of his Ferrari. @360 - No I am not in the pic ... nyways many offers have been made for this 308 but the owner is not even interested in selling it .... @avishar - nice pics, even I was looking for Vijay Mallya's collection but I couldn't find it.
Bro, its just a matter of time.. before they are back to what they had!!!! I envy their dad and its a shame.. what happened to the ambani's... I wish. they would use their wealth to help the poor and educate more ppl in India... I KNOW.. i would do that. if I had even 1% of their wealth.
I agree with you on using their wealth to help the poor in India. Personally I am glad they have lost that much wealth. Its a shame that they are spending their money on useless things like building a 1 billion dollar or buying a airbus plane. Maybe they can learn something from Bill Gates. Its just shows how greedy son of *****es they are. These are times when India needs people like the Ambani, to help improve the country overall. They are ones who are going to make a difference.
To be honest, you don't actually know if they are giving money or not. They like to have fun, but what if they are donating money, but don't like the spotlight. I wouldn't say **** about anyone since you actually don't know them personally. I also don't know them personally, but they could be donating on the side, not being greedy.
I do know them personally and yes they do like being in the spotlight. Otherwise I would not be talking about them.
I would agree with you on some points and would agree with agup on some other. Let's leave Ambanis here and let me tell you something about Ratan Tata. He used to go to his school by his Rolls Royce driven by a chauffeur who was specially called upon from U.K but Ratan Tata didn't like it .........
I have met Ratan Tata on a few occassions and let me tell you he is a very down to earth person. He is one of the very few that loves what he does.
